Think im starting to get a transmission problem (5 spd)

Hey guys I just got an 01 Civic Si/Ex (Canada) a couple months ago. Anyways my tranny just inst shifting really smooth lately. Now I think I know how it happened. When I first got the car I learned how to drive a standard but didn't practice it until i bought the car. Anyways like any first timer I grinded some metal a few times I think it has developed into a problem.

What I am experiencing is mostly a problem in 2nd gear. Not all of the time but frequently when I shift into 2nd it doesn't shift smith. Often you can even feel it click which isn't normal. Other problems which I have had. Is that a couple times now the shifter has actually fallen out of 2nd gear when going around corners. I'm not sure whats up with that. Anyways it still works and it still drives. But the transmission just isn't very smooth. (Yes I know how to drive 5spd thats not an issue.) Anyways what do you guys think the problem could be?

01 transmissions were bad.

Your shifting into second problem sounds like a synchro problem. If its coming out of gear too, then that is a shifter detent problem, this bad detent may also be the cause of the hard shifting you are experiencing.

Well I would assume that its the same problem. So if its a detent problem then how would you fix that?

You would have to drop the tranny and find were the shift linkage connects to the fork levers (there will be 3 different levers that travel 6ways total). While you have the tranny dropped, u might as well get in there check clearances, bushings, replace keys, blocking rings, and synchronizers. Before I would go through all the trouble of doing that, it might be cheaper and less frustrating to get a newer used tranny with low mileage.

Well if its a detent problem what would be involved in fixing the problem? Would this be a hard or expensive problem? Howmuch could I get a used tranny for and where?

Re: Think im starting to get a transmission problem (5 spd)

Got a price from a guy at work who has a friend who works on Honda's. He said $650 for the tranny (New and its an 05) and then $40 per hour on the install. Book says it will be 4 hours install time but he charges real time which could be better or worse. So anyways if I swap the tranny it will fix the problem? Detents will be changed too?
