2002 civic LX 4-spd auto tranny problems

2002 civic LX 4-spd auto tranny problems
right now im working on this civic LX, it wont pull in drive but when its cold, reverse will somewhat catch.... i have NO idea... any suggestions?
also, i was thinking about just replacing the tranny but wasnt real sure about compatability, and wanted to know if any previous year transmission would work with the current ECU, e.g. 96-00 instead of only 01-05, it is a D17A1 motor and i know the trannies will bolt up, but will it work?

nothing will work except 01-05... doesnt matter if its ex/lx/dx or what as long as its from those years
