wiring lighted door sills problem
wiring lighted door sills problem
Okay Ladies and Gents....heres my problem....i bought some led door sills off of ebay about 3 years ago and im just now trying to put em on....the sills have a red and black wire coming from them....i want them to come on when the door is opened(just like the dome lights),......i tried hooking the red wire to the switch on the door(that activates the dome when the door is opened)and then found a good ground on the car for the black wire...however by hooking them up this way the door sills would only come on when the door is closed....dome lights still worked correctly...whereas they would turn off after awhile even if the door was opened, but the sills wouldn't work at all...my dilemma....HOW WOULD I HOOK UP A POWER SOURCE FOR THE SILLS SO THAT THEY WOULD WORK JUST LIKE THE DOME LIGHTS...OPEN DOOR....THEY COME ON....CLOSE THE DOOR....THEY TURN OFF....ABSOLUTELY ANY HELP ON THIS WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED!!!
Re: wiring lighted door sills problem
Obviously the switch doesn't activate the lights on the door. Either that or there's something in between them to reverse the signal, because the switch is pressed when the door is closed, evident by your sills lighting up when the door is closed. You need to tap into the dome light wire farther down the line after the conversion is taking place.
Try that but it's just a guess.

Re: wiring lighted door sills problem
you gotta tap the dome light power wire on the roof. the switch wires will not work as it is an opposite grounded system.
Re: wiring lighted door sills problem
If you didn't want to go all the way into the roof you can reverse the positive timing using a series of relays, let me see if I can find that diagram. . .
Edit: O, I know an easy way with only 1 relay. Using a 5 prong relay with 1 ground, 1 power input, 1 trip input, and 2 power outputs. Several relays are like this through out cars. Power flows through one power output prong while the trip wire has power. Then when the trip wire doesn't have power it flows power through the other power output prong. So you would need to hook up the LED's to the prong that has power when the trip wire doesn't and leave the other power wire disconnected.
I can try to draw a graph.
