Door rattle by hinge

There have been lots of posts on rattles and it sounds (ha ha) like I may just have to deal with this, but...... Has anyone else noticed a rattle coming from the area where the door panel contacts the sides of the dash when the doors are closed? It seems to happen on both sides and is temperature dependent. In the morning when its cold, it rattles, but not in the afternoon when the plastic has warmed up. I was thinking a bit of weatherstrip, foam, cloth, etc. might solve the problem? Anybody tried these?

That rattle is most likely coming from both of your front pillars, where they meet the dash. Next time you hear rattling during your drive, stop, and tap the pillars to see if this is where the sound is coming from. If it is, then try this...

Home Depot sells this water pipe insulation tubing that comes in different diameters. They're black/grey in color and made of a semi-stiff foam; they come in tubes of around 3ft and cost $0.50 or so, and are split lengthwise so that it fits like a sleeve around your water pipes at home. Get one of these tubes (I got the one with the biggest diamter cuz it gives you plenty of material to work with). This material is perfect cuz if you have a black interior, it will be unnoticeable in your car. If you have a beige interior, this may show slightly.

For the A-pillars on both sides, there is a very small gap between the dash and the plastic which covers the pillars. Cut off a small piece of foam diameter-wise, around 1/8" thick and stuff it into this small gap. Use a plastic card, like a credit card but something less important, to do the stuffing; it works great. Make sure the stuffing is tight. Repeat with a thicker piece if it is not tight enough. The stuff can't be seen at all so don't worry about stuffing too much in there.

Thanks for the tip! I've already made one run to Home Depot to pick up some Pergo SilentStep (blue 1/8" foam stuff) to block some of the road noise and avoid the "bass rattles." Someone posted that it elimated alot of theirs, so I glued sheets of that stuff to the backs of most interior panels. Seemed to work alright. Those two front rattles are the only two left, and they are so close, they drive me NUTS! If the pipe insulation works, for everybody!!!!

Which panels did you glue the Pergo to?

If you have left over Pergo, try using that first instead of buying that piping foam. It may work just as well.

I did the two big side panels in the back, rear pillar panels, the panels underneath the upper seatbelt attachments, the step panels, the kick panels and covered the floor. I also put in a couple wedgepacks of Dynamat (damn that stuff is expensive!). Most of the Dynamat coverd the huge holes in the siding under the rear side windows. I still need to put Dynamat and Pergo on the doors, and I think that will make an ever bigger difference.
