Civic right for me?

Hey everyone, first post here....seems like a cool forum

quick background on me-17,long island,ny,currently drive 99 rodeo SUV, ride/race quads&dirtbikes(own a 2005 Honda trx450r quad),college next year.

Within the next year or so I am going to be in the market for a new used ride and I'm having some trouble deciding what's right for me. I want something that is going to make driving a bit more fun than my current ride; allow me to save some money on gas, and look good while doing it. I was pretty set on getting a "crotch rocket" to commute to college on and ride around town but here on long island, people cant drive and I don’t think I want to put myself in such a risky situation at my age....after thinking hard about the street bike idea, I began thinking about a car instead. I have never been into cars, always a big truck person but with gas prices going up, a lifted v8 truck isn’t sensible for me.

I began looking into the vdubb scene, and got a crush on the jetta 1.8t Wolfsburg edition. I was pretty set on saving my money for the dubb, until I starting doing some real research on them. Like most people know, repairs on the vw's are very expensive and there seems to be one to many common problems with them that seem like they could really add up.

After talking myself out of the vw due to it's reliability issues, I psyched myself out of the car game for awhile because I really didn’t like any other car. Now here I am, asking about the civic. I really don't know much about them other than the fact that people in my town love to rice the crap out of them (most likely why I never looked into them, cant stand riced out cars). However, after browsing through the 7th gen. jdm pics thread, I was surprised to see how good they can look with some minor mods (wheels, exhaust, tints, lowered). What I am wondering is,,,, does the civic sound like it would be a good choice for me? I want a 5spd, something with alittle snap but nothing crazy, and overall, just something fun to get me around and look/sound good doing it. I know my Honda race quad has been great, and the general word is they are great with reliability...is this true? if I got a civ, threw a nice set of wheels, a non ricer exhaust, some tints, and possibly some suspension would I have a fun, reliable car capable of saving me some gas?

Sorry for the essay I just wrote....if you made it through, any opinions would be appreciated.

thanks alot

heres a pic of me on my current honda

Re: Civic right for me?

That quad looks like a beast, but yea like 1sykcivic said you best bet is a 99-00 SI...they are pretty pricey like 5-9G for one is very good shape. they come with a B16 which is real snappy for a civic. A bunch ofmy friends have SI, one that boosting 14 lbs making around 350HP and the other one is a GSR swap,

As for staying away from VDubs good move....all i ever here from Vdub owners is how there car always breaks down...but yea Civic's are fun to mod, there is a digital repair manual floating around here, or i can send you one, i got every manual from 92-05.

Hope you enjoy the forum

Re: Civic right for me?

I agree - civics are great college cars. Good on gas and great resale when you graduate. I've had numerous civics, none have ever cost me over $1k per year to drive. I also have never known anyone with a VW to get away without probs. My parents passat had water get into the electrical system which ruined the electronically controlled throttle body. Ended up costing $1200 for the total fix. Total rip in my opinion. Cool quad by the way - makes me want to buy another bike!

Re: Civic right for me?

Sounds like you'd be happy with a civic. I think any Si from 99 up would keep you happy, but 99-00 are more "normal" looking. The 7th gen Si may take a little getting used to, and it'd be more expensive. If you end up having a lot of $$, check out the 07 Si sedan. They've become very popular lately.

Re: Civic right for me?

u should get an rsx...or a newer civic. 99 por 00 civics are not going to always be liek that...the years are adding up and so are the miles on them. and what kids are doing to them nowadays is also adding up. u will find it very hard to find an 00 civic si ina good condition without being modified already. u can find em2s in good condition without being modified at all at dealerships. with very low payments on these, u can afford one. rsx are pricier but they have that added kick to them. em2s arent very fast at all. face it. the older the civic or the more popular, the more beat up ull find it.... thats now 100% true all of the tiome...just alot of the time

Re: Civic right for me?

^all true, but with what i've seen the used RSXs going for lately, i'd save another couple grand, and get the new Si.
