replacing head gasket

im going to replace my head gasket tomorrow. is their a way to slip off the timing belt without having to remove the crankshaft pulley. could i just slide the timing belt off the of the camshaft and stretch it back on? or just loosen the belt tension and remove the belt from the camshaft. either of those two options take into effect that you have the engine TDC on no. 1 piston before removing the belt. thanks for the help

any hints or suggestions?
