Thrown Rod Bearing on D17a2
Yess you are already saying ouch to that so was I. There is probably a bit more damage as well. The story goes, Last Friday I went on a trip to San Francisco and I check and change fluids religiously. I checked my oil level on Friday before leaving, all good. I check my oil on saturday upon my return to sacramento, all good.
On Sunday I start to travel to Vacaville for a cable tv show shoot I am the cameraman for. My vehicle makes it about 15 miles and i start to get a knocking sound from the engine bay. I look for the closest exit which is about 1/4 mile away and neutral it on the off ramp where the engine instantly dies. I roll to a stop and end up pushing to a gas station for the night.
I rented a car trailer for 40 bucks from u haul and got the bitch all the way from davis back to sacramento. Upon inspection at home i check the oil, its pretty much non existent. Baffling i checked the oil just the day before.
So i decide to jack up the car and drain the remaining oil to inspect it. Upon jacking up the car and going under I notice fresh handprints on my usually evenly greased up oil pan. The oil drain plug that is usually crudded up a bit considering I havnt changed oil in a while and was planning on it in the next few weeks is free of crud and appears that someone has recently taken a ratchet and socket to it.
Yes as you have concluded as well as I now know, some bastard slipped under my car while it was parked half on the curb (wich makes the underneath accessable considering im dropped) in front of my GF's house. I went back to check where I was parked and there is some fresh oil spillage.
So there is most definitly some major lower end damage.
as far as i can tell and my mechanic friend too, the noises are coming only from cylinder 1. I gotta drop the oil pan and take a look to see if the crank is F'ed or not.
So I am either in the market for a short block or i am considering a k20a3 to suffice untill I can get a k20a2 later next year. My friend coincidently wrecked his 2003 SI and the motor is undamaged and ready for my taking, he is going to let me have it for $500 if we drive up to chico and pull it.
Now, if the crank is undamaged can i get away with replacing the rod bearing and damaged rod for a while? I dont need it to last forever just maybe 6 months.
Well i am also using this as an excuse to get a k series but as much as i want the type s motor I am fine with the SI motor untill then. I most likely need a new motor anyway and thought a upgrade to si motor would pacify my desire for the k series for a while.

Ya no oil warning light or anything, but im going to pick up a long block for now. I just need to find a better place then HAP in town, they think they can jack up the prices because they are some honda specialty parts place. They want like 1700 for a d17a2??!
yea right for that i got half way to a K swap.
Lol I guess the person that did it i dont even know but they dont like me/jealous of me or something?
Anyway I just need to find a decent deal on a longblock or complete engine and throw it in there, wont be a problem for me besides the $$ I didnt have to pay if this didnt happen.
And everybody hates on the D17? Its got a good thing going for it if you can replace the engine for like 400 bucks
