Bad Oxygen Sensor?

I'm getting some pretty bad gas mileage, 25.7 mpg. So I asked the Honda dealer if they could check if there was something wrong. Maybe I have a bad oxygen sensor. They told me there was no way to detect a problem unless the engine light came. So basically they won't take a look at my car unless the engine light comes on. WTF! That sucks.

I dought its your O2 sensor, but let me ask the following:

1. Auto or Manual

2. A/C on or off most of the time

3. Lots of stop and go traffic or highway type

4. How do you drive; hard on starts or just staying with the flow of traffic?

5. Did the milage suddenly drop off or just the last fill-up

6. Very Important.....Do you fill the car up everytime? or just put in $5 here and there?

7. Is the car totaly stock or are there modifications?

25 mpg is really poor for a Civic, but I can't see a O2 sensor causing this without a "check engine light", or any other codes popping up for that matter. Let me know.

1. Auto

2. A/C off most of the time

3. Highway

4. How do you drive: hard on starts, 60-80 mph on highway.

5. Dropped off in the last 10 refills from about 28 mpg to 25.7 mpg.

6. Fill the car up everytime.

7. Stock.

Could my driving at faster speeds account for such a drop off in gas mileage?

I haven't drove a Civic with a Automatic but at higher speeds the higher the RPM's which of course sucks more fuel. I average about 3500 RPM @80mph in 5th gear and get close to 40 mpg on the highway. Around town which is nothing but stop and go all day long I average about 34 mpg. I don't drive like a Granny but I don't ever floor the gas or speed shift. Dropping off a couple of mpg's isn't a huge drop, but I'd keep my eye on it.

how long a time span has the last 10 refills covered? if you very rarely put gas in, maybe it was because of a change to winter gas? i have been seeing much better gas mileage in the past 2 tanks, so i think we might be back on summer gas here. when i got my civic, we were on winter gas, so i dont know for sure what mine will do on summer gas yet, but on winter gas i got 30.5-37.75mpg from my 5-speed ex coupe, usually it was over 34, only had 2 tanks below it. my last tank was 38.8, and on the tank im on now, i have 390 miles and the gas light hasnt come on yet (usually comes on when ive used about 10.5 gallons). in my 88 dodge omni i got 33-36mpg on summer gas and 29-32mpg on winter gas

I guess it's not that big of a deal, but I'm just worried that it might be a symptom of something more seriously wrong with the car.

1. Auto

2. Heat off most of the time last 2 fillups especially

3. Lots of stop and go, some highway

4. Flow of traffic about 90% of the time (60-65 highway). Every now and then I'll need and do a fast start

5. Been 24 MPG ever since I started driving it back in April

6. Ummm filled up $5 at a time during summer cuz I was out almost every day. Now I have a credit card, top off every time for several months

7. There's modifications, but I still got the same exact mileage back when it was stock, it never got better

I'm about to take my car to the dealership as well. Gonna take my intake out, but I have a feeling they're gonna blame it on my catback exhaust and my wheels. But 24 MPG? I recently reset my ECU and had the heat off the whole time. Then I even tried to granny style it a bit. Still same result every week since I got the car....
