2002 Honda Civic & Cluster Mileage ?
2002 Honda Civic & Cluster Mileage ?
I have a 2002 civic with a bad cluster. The cluster doesn't report the miles and when it does they are recorded......but say you drive 300 miles while the cluster is out, it won't record those 300 miles.
When I was at our local Honda dealer the tech told me that the computer doesn't keep track of these miles. That whatever the cluster reads is what the cluster reads. I found that hard to believe with it having OBD II it doesn't record the miles in the computer someplace.
We know we need a new cluster. If we get one it'll read zero miles. Is there any way to hook into the computer and find out how many miles the computer has recorded? I'm worried that I'll put a new cluster in, truthfull report what we think is the correct mileage on the car, and have a tech tap into the computer to find out it's 10k miles off.
Just want to do things the right way. Please let me know with any help on this.
Thanks in advance,
Chris

somewere on the cluster theres an EEPROM or "chip" that stores the actual mileage. all u need to do is take that chip out of the busted one and put it in the new one.
**note i dont know if this ayplys to civics. as i'm still a noobie.

not sure of how the diagnostics are at honda, but the cars I work on, the mileage is stored in several control modules in the vehicle. And when a car comes in with a blank cluster, we can go into other control modules and record the mileage and transfer it to the new one. I too find it hard to believe that the ecu in the honda doesnt record the mileage. I would ask the shop foreman of the dealer or go to another dealer.
I also have heard that they will leave your cluster at 0, but place a sticker on the door jam of the actual vehicle mileage at the time of cluster replacement.
