Brakes make grinding noise and feel gritty....
So, I noticed recently that my brakes make this grinding noise and feel gritty.
I drive in rush hour traffic 1.5 to 2 hrs each day. I usually notice it when I am in bumper to bumper traffic. It doesn't always happen. It will happen, then I try and recreate it and listen, and nothing!
I think it gets worse when I turn the tires either direction.
I listen to my music loud, so I first noticed an issue with the gritty feel of the pedal.
Do you think it could be time to replace the rotors?
What about the pads?

jack up yer car
take one of your front tires off
look at the pad...
look at the rotors...
if your rotors are not all nice and smooth looking... then well.. time to replace everything...
the radio has an off button for a reason.. press it every now and then while driving... you just might hear something...

Update...
Well now that I know it is happening, I have been observing it more carefully each day. My brakes are smooth and silent when I stop from a good deal of speed, such a slowing down to a complete stop in traffic. The nosies and grinding seems to come when I am moving slow like 10-15 miles per hour and then slowly stop. It also seems to happen toward the end of the stop. Like if you were to spin a wheel, and the first half of the spin is smooth and last half is rough.
I think it is also more prevalent after I have been driving for a while.
Has anyone experienced this issue?
Is it possible it could be a problem with the brake booster or the proportioning valve?

I have noticed the same issue for along time now. even after replacing my pads, rotors and calipers, every so often at slow speeds, there is a bad grinding noise. I have yet to explore what may be causing it. for awhile it was a thought among several people that the pads were shifting in the brackets, but not a fact.
but given that it only happens every so often, it isnt enough for me to spend the time figuring out what it is.

Hey I know what you are talking about. Mine does it sometimes if I am braking and hit a pot hole or some type of rough road. But it only has happend twice in almost 7 months. Next time i change my brakes which should be in the next 2 months I will check for anything loose, and if your post is still on here I will tell you if I have found anything.
I talked to my Honda expert and described the problem over the phone. He suggested replacing the brake pads. He says that after-market pads tend to cause noise with our cars. It seems like everthing after-market is an issue for Hondas.
Has anyone else experienced issues with non-OEM pads?

honda just wants yer money...
any parts store will carry like 30 different pads that fit our cars ranging anywhere from $20 a set to around $70 for a standard set (standard pads not high end performance pads)
ive never had a problem with the $40 sets.. and it only takes like 20-30 minutes to change them... or just pay someone else.. its yer money i cant tell you how to spend it... (sendOmeByourEmoneyY!!!!!!)

It could be that every so often some material comes free of the pad and gets ground into the rotor. But the member who started this thread should inspect the rotors as suggested by an earlier poster.
I have this problem currently, and I've had this problem since about July or August. I had new brakes put on back in May so I know that is not the problem.
I've had three different places look at it(Honda dealer ship, Tires Plus, and some local place) and no one knows what the problem is. The closest thing I got to a problem and a solution was Hodna told me that my "bushings" are getting worn and that I will need to replace them(yeah I agree, they want my money) but everyone else has said my "bushings" are fine.
Here's the problem:
When slowing down at any speed, just BARELY pressing the brakes, the grinding noise begins, and I can hear it until I am at a complete stop. Now if I slam on the brakes, I don't hear it. It's only when they are slightly pressed and when I let off of it.
The grinding noise changes too, like something is off...warped even. Like it's louder at one point and as the wheel turns, it makes that same louder noise at that spot.
Has anyone got a clue as to what this could be? It's driving me mad!!

oh, by the way....it's only on the front. Sounds like the passenger side to me as the driver, but it sounds like it's on the drivers side when my wife is in the car.....
Also, it's much much louder when there are two people in the car.

I am assuming there is a tsb or dtb that honda knows about. I know there are soccer moms out there who have had this same issue and gone to the dealer.
I was starting to suspect the bearings. Not to long ago, I had a lug stud break when I was removing the nut. I had to have the wheel hub pulled off to replace the stud. The tech told me that putting the hub back on was hard because soemtimes the bearings inside the hub-axle can get damaged. My car sounded good for a while after this repair.
So, I am not sure if it is bearing related or not. I wish I knew because I am about to go and buy new pads and rotors from the dealer for like 200 bucks.
I hope this fixes this annoying *** problem.

I have the same damn problem. I thought it was my rotors and they were smooth, i did a quick machine job on them and they were as smooth as my windows. New pads and eveyrthing. It still happens. When you are driving slow tho and slowly press down. It gets very annoying. But theres no answers on this thread. We shoudl find someone who works for Honda. The people at Hondaland arn't too bright down here.
Well...after replacing the bushings and a cracked control arm(driver side), the noise was still there.
Although after replacing the rotors with brand new ones, the noise has stopped....My problem has been fixed!!
Brand new rotors were $23 for each...I highly suggest buying new ones rather than turning them, cause that cost more than buying new ones.

Its more than likely the After market brakepads ... coz exactly the same thing happened with my car ... replaced my rotors with brembos ... and after market pads ... evertyning was fine for a couple of months and the issue started again ... replaced those pads with good aftermarket ones from Advance auto parts ... they were smooth as hell but sometime when ur waiting to get on to a heavy traffic street u can feel the grinding when ur cars moving back and forth ... Next i think i will get everything replaced once n for all from Honda ...
ahem!! its not your bearings.. its not your brake pads.. its your shocks.. how do i know.. because my ride is doing the same thing right now.. i just had the brakes changed.. after that .. i thought something was grinding against my rims that was causing the noise.. but it wasnt that.. go ride somewhere.. and drive like 5 mph.. really slow so you can hear it.. when you drive over a bump.. or the cracks in the road..or even try to make sum turns without braking.. thats when youll hear it.. when you hit that bump.. its rollin at the same time.. it sounds like a grinding noise.. You say you sometimes you hear it when you brake.. thats cuz when youre coming to a stop.. the weight is being pushed to the front of your ride.. thus causing your shock to make noise.. hope this helps..
angela aka EM2 CHICK.. :P

I think when one of those power draws kicks off, there is a time where there is more power than needed available, so the brake pedal can be pushed in more easily, so it moves in and the brakes kick in more.
