Exhaust Manifold

Can a crack in the exhaust manifold affect performance? I have a crack in mine and it seems as though my car is slower going up hills now.

definately. and depending on where the crack is it can cause you to burn a valve if air gets sucked in through the crack. the added oxygen can cause a increase in temperature.

When I put the gasket back on do I need a sealer? Also, are those eBay exhaust manifolds any good? I am not looking for mroe power than stock, but would like to get it back to at least enough power to make it up hills going 70 without having to shift into 3rd gear. I have a 2001 LX with a 5-speed.

no sealer just a new gasket. no the ebay manifolds arent worth a dime. and the only way to do a smog legal header on a lx is to do an entire ex exhaust conversion. this is the route i did and maybe got 5hp if i was lucky. but i did spend almost $1k yay!! no seriously dont bother. if anything get your piping diameter increased with a dc5r(rsx type r) muffler...

i have seen it happen. experience will tell the tale. it happened to a friend on his s10 with a blon manifold gasket. cats can also go bad if there are leaks around them. when oxygen is intorduced to heat it makes more heat. i am sure you know the basics. i did a quick search whiel here at work and couldnt find much for you. but here is a short moention on a alfa romero motor

a burnt valve can cause a misfire due to high combustion temps this is one of the problem i experienced with my integra before i swapped the b20 in. as far as an exhaust leak causing a misfire i am not 100% because i have never run into that problem. but it could be possible with the right scenario. including the cat being superheated and causing a bad signal form the o2. or if the leak was near the head.

What kind of modifications can I do with an EX VTEC versus the LX? I drove a 2005 Special Edition earlier this week and it felt just as slow as my LX. Both 5-speeds.

What can I do with an EX that I couldn't do with an LX? They are both about the same when it comes to hill climbing power, right?

The ex is somewhat stronger up hill. And plus an ex is more powerfull and different gearing allows for better accelleration!!!! You will find more for an ex as far as exhaust products go. Ex stock 4-1 header flows almost as good as a DC, but an lx can pick up a little more with a header because of the design of the crap stocker part. EX is the way to go, but not because of vtec, because it is more powerful period.

nope.

I have had a randome cylinder mis fire for two years.

Every three days I clear my check engine light.(It runs WAYYY better with the light off)

Then you mented burnt valve sooooo I thought maybe its maybe just maybe I have a burn valve?

I also think it could be a clogged cat...

dont know.

if you had a burnt valve you would be burning oil. plain and simple. a clogged cat probably wouldnt cause a misfire unless it was really bad and holding back a bunch of back pressure. and in this case you would notice a huge loss in power and resetting the ecu wouldnt correct it. i would be looking into th eignition system. that is the most common reason for a misfire. if you have a digital volt meter then check all your signals at the plug wires. and maybe try a new set of plugs. did this start to occur afer the vafc install and tune?

Ill have to test apmidge or currant strength. (or what ever its called)

Also Im gona have to have another compression test too.

Burnt valve would come up during the compresssion test correct?

any other test you recomend?

yes a burnt valve will cause compresion loss, which would also result in a loss of power. if you dont feel a loss in power then its a random misfire probably caused my the wires or ignition system...
