Any problems with "notchy" shifters on '02s?
My '02 has just over 800 miles on the clock. 400 miles back, the shifting was fairly precise and smooth as far as engaging the individual gears. Now, it's "notchy" as f*ck and 1st, 2nd and 3rd feel like I'm driving a tractor trailer instead of a little four-banger. Anybody else feeling this in the gate? Does the short-shifter help alleviate this at all?

<< By "notchy", do you mean you have trouble shifting it into gears, or it feels like something's blocking your shifter ? >>
The latter. It feels like I've got to wiggle it into the gate just a bit. It doesn't keep me from shifting obviously, but it is getting annoying.
Ah, ok...
Being notchy in 1st is normal if you're not at a COMPLETE standstill. It's sometimes notchy going into 2nd too, if I'm going somewhat fast. My previous Toyota was exactly like this too. It's a safety feature almost all manual cars have to prevent you from accidentally blowing up your engine by dropping it into a low gear at high speeds.
Shouldn't be happening in 3rd gear though.

Should it be this way at all times? I'm mostly irritated by the upshifts, 1>2, 2>3 since I take more care and time on the downshifts anyway.
Thanks for your input.
Oh, you're talking about regular upshifting ... Then yes, you may want to get that checked by your dealer. And you're right in that it shouldn't be happening all the time.
Sorry for the misunderstanding. I thought you were talking about popping it into a low gear at a relatively high speed.

Guys, I had, and still have, the same exact problem. It's not like it grinds, but rather, it almost feels like its preventing you from getting into gear nice and smooth, right? He's right, its on upshfting, into 2nd, and occasionally into 3rd. God, its even felt wierd goin into fifth. 2nd is the worst though..and yes, it gets really annoying. There is a service bulletin on this, but I took it to the dealer and they first accused me of using gear lube oil in my trans, when the only times I ever serviced the vehicle its been done by THEM. They apologized when they found out it wasnt the trans fluid, but they went ahead and replaced it anyways.
They sent me home after that, probably didnt wanna pay the money to get that inner joint part the bulletin suggests. "If you feel like it still doesnt work, don't hesitate to call us.." was all I got.
If anyone out there would like to petition honda about this problem, if you're having this same problem, I would be more than happy to start; I dont exactly have much more warranty time...!
