E-Brake Problem?

Maybe it's just me, but I have always been under the impression that the emergency brake locked the rear wheels. Correct me if I'm wrong, but since I live in Florida, I rarely have to use it, so the correct operation of an e-brake is somewhat unfamiliar to me.

Just for curiosities sake, I pulled the e-brake today while the civ. was idling and the car didn't stop! Puzzled by this, I decided to try it again. I accelerated to about 20 miles per hour, and pulled the e-brake, and the car just barely slowed down.

Do I have a problem with my E-brake or is this normal?
Thanks in advance!

I'm not sure but I'm thinking you have a problem, because in my old car (87 accord) I can still pull the ebrake and it comes to a complete stop

Emergency brakes are strange, on most cars that I know of you can take off with the emrgency brake, though you will burn the hell out of them. But they should lock if you try to go in reverse. Just pull it and try to back up with it up, if it doesn't lock the tires then have it checked out.

jack up the car and with the brake on and see if you can spin the back tires. i know i couldnt spin mine with the brake on

btw, its not a good idea to put the e-brake on while driving if you dont have your normal brakes on too, you could lose control of the car

Thanks for the input guys, I'll do some testing when I get some free time.

I pulled the e-brake in an empty parking lot, at a very slow speed, as I am aware of the dangers of operating an emergency brake while in motion. Thanks for the concern though.

Once again, thanks everyone.

for the record, its not an "Emergency Brake"

its a "Parking Break"

its not designed to just lock up your rear wheels, it holds your car when you park.
