CRAZY wheel shaking!!

anyone can help me out? ever since i had the brakes on my car changed (couple weeks ago) from 100kmh(60mph) my wheel would start to shake//vibrate, the faster i go after that the worst it gets. by 120 (70mph) its unbareably, cuz the wheel shakes so violently, and so does the car. i hate it. one time i had hit a big bump and the car didnt shake at 100, but the next day it started again. if i let go of the wheel the car will go straight and then kinda jerk to the right, most of the time. sometimes it goes to the left...? wtf anyone have any idea what the problem could be?

what exactly did you have changed? if you are still using the old rotors with new pads and didnt resurface the new rotors, they may have alot of runout on them causing the vibration. Now if you did have the rotors turned or replaced, its a possibility they were warped from the beginning and may just need to be turned.

if its vibrating without pressing the brakes you need a wheel balance. either that or someone doesn't know how to install brakes.

since the wheel shaking didnt start until you had your brakes changed, its your brakes, not wheel balancing. What parts other than pads did you get (i'm assuming the front brakes right?). if they reused the old rotor and just resurfaced it, its most likely they warped it. this happened to me. the moron technician warped my rotors when resurfacing them and the car shook like crazy when i pressed the brakes.

if ur steering wheel shakes while DRIVING, then A) ur rims are bent and/or B) need to balance ur wheels. if ur steering wheel shakes while BRAKING, then ur rotors are warped and depending on how hard u brake before u replace ur pads, ur rotors may/may not need to be machined

i do indeed have a bad bent rim. even my uncle whos been a mechanic for honda for ages told me thatd be the reason for the wheel shaking. the othey day i put the bent tire in the back and the back in the front (switched em) and i still get the shaking,..normal?

yes, a bent rim will cause shaking of the steering wheel no matter where it's placed.

Actually, no it won't. I have two badly bent rims on the front, and the shaking only occurs above 90-100. I balanced them myself, and it has for the most part overcame the issue of the bent rims. However if yours are severely bent and you haven't had them balanced since they were bent, then that would probably be the reason for the wheel shake.

my steering wheel vibrates a bit wen i hit over 80km/hr, is it because my car is too sensitive to the ground? cuz i do have stiff shocks, and i m sure my wheels are not bent cuz i had them for less dan a month. is this normal? or my car is not balanced?

80 km/h...Is that like 50 MPH? Cause if so, then you probably need to have them balanced.

Not completely true, if the tire and wheel are moved to the rear of the car it should stop the shaking of the steering wheel but you will still feel the car shaking

Have the balance re-checked....

jerseydetailer has a little shameless behaviour in the past
first check you lugs nuts...if they are loose or too tight that can cause the problem...to tight can cause warping of the rotor..to loose.....make sure you arent missing any lug nuts...then remove all front and back (i bet you they are hard to remove)...then put back on properly torqued 80ft/lbs i believe..try that as it the simplest

Karizzle:

I'm suprised your uncle was willing to troubleshoot the problem sight unseen, I know very few professionals who will do that.

Anyhow, shaking wheels are usually caused by balance issues. Sometimes the causes aren't that obvious, however... I troubleshot my sister's Corolla from 800 miles away a couple of weeks ago with a similar issue. Turns out the wheels were full of snow, she had recently put it in a ditch. I doesn't take much to screw up your balance!

Check your tire pressures, if they're good, take it to a decent shop and have the wheels balanced. See if there is a place in your town with a Hunter GSP9700, they're pretty spanky.

Oh, and the other suggestion with respect to lug nut torque is a good idea. Did you cross-tighten, and use a torque wrench?

Wes
