Problems with Coupe or Sedan?
After reading some topics in this forum, i was wondering if ppl are having more problems with the coupe or with the sedan.
This is due to the fact that the coupe is built in US while the sedan is built in Canada. (At least for me here in Canada)
Thanks for all input!

List of problems with my 2001 EX COUPE
1. Rocking seat that the dealer can't fix
2. SIDE AIR BAG light comes on and stays onf or no reason
3. moon Roof rattle.
I am actually dealing with a dealer rep now about all of the issues since my service dept. is just clueless.
I think the 2002's are free of all of these issues though.

Well, that explains it ... the coupe is built in the US. My 02 coupe's rear deck rattles like a MF and I'm afraid to take it to the dealer. I don't want those goons to "re-engineer" it if you know what I mean. I'm 85% satisfied with the car, but this is my 3rd NEW Honda and I can tell you for a fact, that I am seeing a decrease in quality control standards in certain aspects of the build quality. That's too bad.

well.... personally i think that the sedans are more chanlenging to deal with because it is harder to find body kits and such for it....
BTW does anyone know where i can find a body kit for an ex sedan???

i have an 02 civic lx sedan. it has not had any major problems besides rattles here and there. never drove a coupe, so no idea to compare. i guess you should be compare coupe vs. sedan, but north american built vs. japanese imported instead. that will make some sense build quality wise. hope this helps.
02's are on average much more reliable than the 01's. that's just the whole "first year bugs" thing, though. the '96 civics (1st year for 6th gen) weren't particularly great, either.

I would say that more problems have been mentioned with the coupes than the sedans on this forum. This is most likely because there are way more members with coupes than sedans. Plus, I don't think the common issues with the car have anything to do with where they are built. I think they are design problems.
i also wish it is a design problem and not manufacture-specific. but the fact tells that it might be just both although a friend of mine whose 2k2 civici was imported from japan has not even a rattle in her car. maybe its just coincidence, but who knows? for me, i would have taken it seriously when buying my civic if i knew there were still quite some imported civics and had choice to pick. that is my 2 cents
after seeing a lot of other people are having the same, or even worse, problems on their 2k2 civics, i should have had a peaceful mind by now, i wish. i just could not think it over that if canada and usa can make the last generation civic top of the notch, how could they not make the same thing again?
i would rather think it is a design problem, but the cold fact tells me that the point of origin does play a big role. before i bought mine, i did not even know that there are still decent civics imported from japan. lately, i cruised around the online forum of hyundai elantra/santa fe, toyota corolla/camry/celia, mazda protege/626, as well as honda civic/accord. as you may know, corolla and camry sold in usa are almost 100% made in North America. if you have not heard anything bad about corolla, it is because it is made from the best plant, NUMMY, in the states.
in contrast, the new camry got tons of complains, which are faw worse than our civics, not mentioning the poor altima that is imported from mexico. the celica is still 100% made in japan, and interestingly i could not find any bad things about it except complains about its weak a/c.
if you happen to know recent hyundai cars, they are no worse than u.s. hondas, if not better (but remember they are way cheaper). their customer reviews are as happy as a 16-year-old kid gets his first lowed civic. i even found a lot of loyal honda owners are switching to that "H" cars.
the most obvious example is mazda protege/626. i did not even consider mazda before getting my civic since it is under ford. but as for now, protege is my next car to own (maybe even trade-in my civic) if it will be still imported from japan like it is now. look at their forums, 626's is so quiet because no one is buying it. then the protege's, thousands of praises except the typical engine rattle (which goes away after engine gets to normal temperature) on the current model. the feedback is almost perfect. how can i not think that protege is simply a better car than the civic i am having.
if ONLY the build quality is on par, honda civic should be still one of the advanced and best small cars on the world. i am from asia, all my friends are toyota and honda fans. they dont even know the american brands too well (i guess gm and dc are happy enough selling car in usa) year after year, they are only buying civics and corollas (richer people get europeans, like what yankees are doing here). you dont even see the mazda 323 (the protege here) too often.
honestly, i want to ask, if honda japan can product top quality car and sell them to the rest of the world, why not american honda does their best to treat their fellow americans? wouldnt canadians and americans deserve the best quality (it should be called standard quality if you are in japan) when purchasing their civcis............?
no offence to anyone or anywhere

Yup. I've noticed that FORD FOCUS has tons of complaints (built in MEXICO), the PROTEGE built in JAPAN has very few if any at all. So while, FORD owns MAZDA - thankfully for MAZDA owners they don't run their manufacturing plants.
I've always believed that the country of origin plays a role in the build quality (different from engineering).
For example, our family's previous Nissan Maxima was exceptionally well built and solid, even after six years. It was built in Japan.
My brother's Sentra SE-R Spec V seems fairly well built, but the materials are cheap. It's rattle free thus far and it is built in Mexico.
Also the VW Jetta, which has a reputation for good build quality among compact cars... is also built in Mexico.
So I'm a bit confused if this holds true anymore.

to my opinion, jetta and sentra could be as good as current corolla and previous civic if they were built in where they should. i heard a lot of bad things about the new bettles and jettas, wondering if it is craftsmanship related.
as for the civic, there was far less problems a few years back than now, but the majorities are always built in the US and Canada since the late 80's. Could the good craftsmanship established before go bad when we enter this new century?
or it is as simple as a design problem.
BTW, from what CR reported, japan-build proteges were in average in terms of build quality in the middle 90's. they started catching up recently and have been topped the civics last year. if japanese craftsmanship is so superior, how could this happen in the first place, wouldn't the proteges be always the kings of compact cars and last forever and have the highest resale value? .....

i have a friend with a protege and he abuses it like crazy...always misses regular maintenance and stuff but he managed to put 110 000KM on it in the last 3 years(only 3 years old) and not one single break down yet...
one thing that sucks about it is that the car rattles ALOT when the speakers are turned up....door pannels wires in the trunk etc all rattle when music is turned up....i don't have that problem with my civic because honda wrapped most of the wires with foam...

My LX Sedan was built in Ohio - problems are erratic fuel gauge at low readings , creaky binding clutch at times and some ocasional rattles. But it now has over 45,000 miles and has been totally relaible , great fuel mileage even with my leadfoot tactics! Good intrior room , great outward visibility , first rate ergonomics and actually pretty decent performance with the 5 speed.
But I might trade for a used Accord later - seems to be the only affordable car out there I like next to the Civics.
As far as Mazda Proteges - drove an ES version a few years ago - very peppy , I agree. But going down the interstate at like 4300 rpm in 5th gear would get old very fast! Even at 60 mph it was turning like 3300 rpm - way too much! I'll stick with the Civic.
