How do I replace my Fuel Filter?

I have changed plugs/oil/fluids and ran "cleaners" through my car and my gas mileage just is sucking. On MY normal driving I get about 22... if I baby it *I have tried so hard during some fill ups* I will get about 27... I have a feeling I might as well change my fuel filter. When I changed it on my old Corsica it did wonders because it was clogged to HELL.

My question is where do I change it at, because the 2 cars I have done it on it was RIGHT on the back of the tanks with the lines *cavalier/corsica*, but I have not done or even attempted it on my civic. I read somewhere that I have to pull it up and out of my gas tank under the seat? huh? I don't know and I have not looked yet, so I was just wondering if there was DIY or tips out there was to how/where it was to same me some time.

you dont need to change it. The civic filter is a lifetime filter located inside the fuel tank. I thought the same thing awhile back and I changed mine, which was kind of a pain, afterwards the fuel pump failed, and after I talked with a teacher who was a tech at honda, he said the newer civics fuel filters are lifetime filters. the only time you need to change it is if the fuel pressure is low. Besides, the honda filters are different then normal fuel filters. One the price is 4x as much, I paid almost $60 for it from honda. it might have been a bit less. Also the construction is different.

Now you can change it, but I have been told by several techs it isnt necessary unless you are having fuel problems.

Now I have to ask this, is your check engine light on?

fp60 fuel treatment.

if your c.e.l. is on like Street said, then have the code read....odds are you have a faulty 02 (which is becoming the norm) causing excess fuel to be sent.

or you have sucky-*** driving habits, extreme stop-and-go, very short distance driving, frequent high speed/excessive reving past 4500...or a combo of those....

my avg for driving because everything is about 5-10 miles from me is about 27mpg

I know you said you have tried to be careful in driving habits, but it really does make a difference. I have an 2001 manual transmission and easily get 35 mpg city and 40+ mpg highway. BUT, I am a VERY conservative driver. Yes, I do the speedlimit, but I am always watching way ahead of me to anticipate stops, etc. I often drive stop and go freeway, but by not hugging the bumper of the car in front of me, I rarely have to hit the brakes (sort of a challenge for me!). I don't stress about my driving. I could be aggressive, but it would only get me to my destination a minute or two earlier. I also run synthetic oil.
If you have an automatic transmission, your results may be different.

Good luck,
Gardener
