Whining Noise From Engine

Hey sorry if this is a repost, but when I first start up my car when the engine is cold, it makes this "whining" noise, kinda like the whining noise you hear when you go in reverse really fast. And as I accelerate, the whining noise elevates as well (i.e. when I rev up the engine, the whining noise gets higher pitch with it). Then, when the engine is warmed up, it's gone. Anyone know what is it and where it's from and how it can be fixed? Thanks guys!

i dont mean to jack the thread but i had a similar question about my moms chrysler town and country limited minivan. So this thing has about 61k on it and it sounds like complete crap. First of all, the biggest problem. Basically it sounds like it's supercharged....but its not. Secondly. it sounds like something is clunking when its cold. thirdly, she's brought it into the chrysler dealership three times for servicing and for the above reasons and they keep telling her everything is fine!

just wait and see. if its alternator bearings, then the alt will fail and your battery light will come on. usually belts make squeak noises so i don't think its that.

Interesting, that would be the last bit of advice I took from that teacher. Why would needing an oil change make your car whine? Maybe if it were almost bone dry and the bearings were eating themselves away or your oil pump was sucking air, come on.

Perhaps you mis-understood him and he meant it might be low on power steering fluid? That's a possible cause for a whine and I'll give him the benefit of doubt.

Typically to troubleshoot this problem I narrow down the area the noise is coming from and spray some WD-40 or PB-Blaster on the suspect bearing, if the noise goes away you've found your culpret. Of course this is a real temp cure, after the lube wears off the noise will come back. This doesn't always work if it's an internal sealed bearing.

My other trick is a stethoscope with a metal rod on it, they're pretty cheap but really handy. You can trace sounds around the engine to narrow down your search. Good for finding noisy lifters, rod knocks, stuff like that. A plain old long wooden dowel or something works too but you're limited to where you can fit it and place your ear on it.

Sounds like the input shaft bearing honestly m8.

I've had the same problem since I bought my car, and I don't think it's a matter of the car warming up, but the tranny. Is it any auto? If not, sounds like tranny whine as described in the thread at the top.

Well I tracked down my whine and as luck would have it, it's coming from the transmission area, not the front, as I was hoping it was just the alt or ps pump. I'm going to post more in another thread relating to tranny slippage.

I stopped by Honda this morning.

The main tech there said the problem is with the torque converter clutches, they have problems with them coming apart and then sending the debri through the rest of the tranny, then the pump starts whining then the pump dies and takes the rest of it with it.

He said Honda doesn't make the converters and he's seen problems with them since '96. In '03 they've supposedly gotten better. Replacing the tranny (they don't rebuild) and labor is $2500-3K depending where they can get the transmission from.

According to him a new one from Honda is about $2000 and said a rebuild from someone locally should be about $1200, which I'll call around and find out today on that.

see the problem is just swapping another one in will cause the same problem with debris breaking the pump when it breaks again.

I'd go with an aftermarket torque converter if I rebuild/replace.

If the Honda tech was correct, he said they were getting better converters from 03 on.

I'd try to find out who makes Honda's converters and avoid that manufacturer. I'm going to guess that there's probably only one company that makes them, but maybe there are some others that rebuild them.

I dunno. I'm negotiating right now to see what kind of trade in I can get on a new Corolla with a 5 speed. I think they're ugly, but getting from point A to point B is my main concern now, not what I look like in-between the points.

I got the same noise. My honda dealer (in Italy) installed a anti-vibrating kit with bad results. I'm still investigating.

merlin11,

You can upload your video to www.youtube.com and post the link on here.
I recorded a video, but the sound wasn't audible at all once played. But I just went to get 1 of my belts replaced last week (at 30k miles ) and there is no more sound. If you haven't already, might want to check if 1 of the belts are loose.

I just started experiencing this the other week... I'm glad I researched it here. I believe I'll be taking my car to the transmission shop to have a look... it's been slipping for at least a year now anyway.
