CEL P1166 Code (Fuel Air Metering) (Primary HO2S (No. 1) Heater System Electrical)

Informative Post,

P1166 CEL Code Information

No Response Needed.

Adding this Post to Answer Question for those who Search the Code P1166

2002 Honda Civic HX (E-vtec) Model
79,000 Miles
Stock w/ the exception of Cold Air Intake

The CEL (Check Engine Light) Code P1166
OBDII reader may list it as:
Manfacurer Contrl. Fuel Air Metering

I think the Forum Sticky List it as:
Primary HO2S (No. 1) Heater System Electrical

The code is initiated from the Oxygen Sensor (o2) on the heat shield on the exhaust manifold.

The Honda Service Manual, is a bit confusing on this Code P1166. The Service Manual Takes you through a series of Electrical Test in order to find which item is faulty. According to the test there are three items that May be faulty. The First is the ECU, the Second is the relay tied into that O2 Sensor, and the third would be a short in the wiring someone in the line.

According to the Manual, the O2 sensor is not faulty if this code is thrown.

In my Paticular Case, the O2 Sensor was Faulty.

After Arguing with the Dealership, over thier diagnostic, I took their advice and ordered a new Sensor and swapped it.

Sensor was $220 from www.majestichonda.com where it would of been $280 from the Dealer.

The install was a Piece of Cake. I used a 7/8" Oxygen Sensor Ratchet from SEARS ($10) The old one came off and the New one went in, with in minutes.

The CEL is now off. I will update this thread if I get another code.

Many Thanks to Streetglower who went through a lot of effort to get me information from the Factory Service Manual and Walk me through the Electrical Test.

Someone please Rep him for me, as I have repped him too many times.

Hope this Post Helps Someone down the Road.

I am glad you got it fixed.

But I am as confused as you as to why the service manaul never listed the o2 sensor as a possible cause. maybe someone who has been in the field for a long time can explain it. all I can think of is the service manaul doesnt include all of the diagnostic steps. But I am not sure.

I think it was probably just an error in the manual. Or Maybe it was under the assumption that "You already tried the Sensor, and it is not the Sensor"

Yeah!! That's why I was so argueing w/ the dealership trying to make sure they did the diagnostic correct. I wasn't about to spend $280 if they weren't 100% sure.

I failed a PA emmissions test with the following codes:

P1166 Primary HO2S (No. 1) Heater System Electrical
P1167 Primary HO2S (No. 1) Heater System

I'm dirt poor at the moment so replacing the o2 sensor (at $220+) was the last thing i wanted to replace. I tested the circuit and fuses, but everything looked ok. I called the dealer a few times to see if they can give any advice, but they weren't much help (go figure ) I finally talked to and a local, reputable diag place and the old timer told me that its probably the sensor since they go bad around 60k miles anyway. I bought one from AutoZone for $245, rented their socket and installed it in about 2 minutes. About 2 miles later the light was off! wooooooo!

I would like to thank 4Jacks and StreetGlower for all of their awesome help! both repped!

Is it me?
Why are you guys paying 200+ for O2 sensors? They're about 45 bucks.

I take that back... it appears the HX has a wideband primary (or at least for that much I hope its a WB) Interesting... but sucks that it needs to be replaced.

I did a lot of research and in a different thread someone, possibly 4Jacks, said that the Bosch sensor did not work for him. Bosch OE type is ~$60, Denso, which is what's in from the factory, was $245 at AutoZone.

I guess that little extra money we've saved thus far on gas is negated by paying 4x the amount for an o2 sensor. lol
