battery going dead.
When you tried to start it, di it just make a rapid clicking noise? If so, the battery is shot and needs replacing. Take it to autozone and have them do a load test on it.

i had the exact same problem with my 02 ex. it was bout 65 degress when this happen. i had my fogs, ac, defog and sub going and the gauges went out. i jumped the civic and brought it to the dealership. they coudlnt find anything wrong, battery was full and alternator was running correctly. till this day i still do not know what happen. but oh well haha.
Your alternator is gone. Once it goes, the lights in your car will run off your battery until your battery is dead because your alternator is no longer there to charge it while you're driving. Hence the reason for your lights going dim - no juice left. But your engine runs off gas, it only uses the battery to start it. Therefore you'd be able to drive the car fine but once you turn it off, it wouldn't start with a dead battery.
This happened to my friend once and I told him if he's going to turn it off, do it in the parking lot of a service station.

This happened to my son's 2005 civic. He pulled off the road, turned it off wouldn't start. We jumped it, everything came on, had to reset radio. Started fine in the morning. Battery and alternator checked out ok. Mechanic couldn't figure it out???.
