Ticking noise

i am experiencing a loud ticking noise from the engine whenever i start it up in the cold. I know it's normal for a car to be a bit noisy when its started up in extreme cold but this is really loud! The noise goes away when the engine is warmed. What could be the problem? Could it be something wrong with the valves?
