transmission problem - $2,450 - wtf?
here's the deal. i failed my emmission test for the following reasons:
P1298 - Manufacturer specific code
P0740 - Torque converter clutch circuit
i looked up the codes on this thread
http://www.7thgencivic.com/forums/sh...d.php?t=182026
for both post#1 and #9
P0740 Torque Converter Clutch Circuit Malfunction
P0740 Problem in Lock-up Control System
P1298 Electrical Load Detector Circuit High Input
P1298 Electric Load Detector (ELD) Circuit High Voltage
anyway, i took my car to a transmission specialist and they had to take my transmission apart to find out the problem. they're telling me that there's something wrong with my clutch converter and that it would cost $2,450. i only have 42k miles on my car. could this really be possible?! please help me. i'm thinking if i have to spend that much money anyway, that i could just replace my engine and get a k20 (i'm not familiar with the process yet, but it costs just about $3,000 to my knowledge). what do you suggest? thanks in advance. btw, i have a 2001 lx auto.

Welcome to the world of 7th gen transmissions. The Auto's have a flaw that by now Honda HAS to be aware of. Unfortunately, if they are, they won't admit to it. I had several conversations with a tranny shop I deal with. He knows it's a flaw, and there is an UPDATED replacement part to fix it. But it's NOT being acnowledged by Honda. You could try to hammer at Honda by means of letters, etc. These transmissions are known to fail pretty early, though there are some that have survived into the 100k mark. $2400 is outrageous for a repair, but shops have you over a barrel and know it.
Don't know what else to tell you. A good used one is much less, but could die just as soon.
This is just one of the reasons I am watching the forums for a while before I buy another Honda. All in all, I like Hondas, but the 7th gen seems to be the problem child of the line. For what it's worth, it still has FAR less problems than most other brands out there, but Honda used to be bullet proof.

I have an automatic and have survived the 100k mark... My transmission is fine (not on wood) but I am looking in to upgrade my automatic transmission and I have found a Honda Torque Converter Upgrade for $965.11.
http://www.tciauto.com/sport_compact.htm
But for $2,450 is too much. But if you had to spend it I would do a swap. But it will cost more than $5,000 unless you do your own work...there are thread out there that have the almost exact cost of everything.
I can’t log in right know but that ^^ $900 dollar SI motor don't sound to bad but don't know all the details. Anyways Good Luck at whatever you do.

Call Honda of America ASAP, most people in your situation have only had to pay around $800-$300 for a tranny rebuild. They know it's aproblem and are not recalling it, but are helping people who have problems with it. You can search around and find other that have had simliar problems and gotten help, but you may have to have it towed to Honda.

Take it to Honda, Honda of America is much more willing to help pay if the work is done at Honda. Just make sure you get the problem diagnosed, then talk to Honda of America before the actual work is done, because if Honda doesn't help you pay, take the car someplace else.

just do either a 5-speed swap or put a new tranny in,
bought a new auto on here under 20,000 miles for 360 dollars and put it in, in a day. of course now I think I should have done a 5-speed swap for just the extra few bucks because it would have been a lot easier.

past warranty, you 35k past warranty, so you have 71k miles. They will probably pay for part of it. I think it's kind of been a crap shoot for most people on here. Around 70-75k seems to be where they start paying less or paying nothing, but I would still try.
