Well, I'm not sure if the '01 keys are magnetically coded or not, but I think they are. I asked the dealer how much new keys cost, they said it is about $45 (this was about 2 years ago) to cut and code the key for an '03 civic. But don't feel bad, it costs $125 to get a new key for my '04 Accord I used to have

Anyway, yeah, Honda is the only one who can code the keys, so take you car back to them, if you don't have the key code handy, they will have to look it up from you vin number, so you should take the car. They might be able to pull it from the valet key, but I'm not sure about that.

tacheon is on a distinguished road
A good locksmith with a handheld programmer can make a new key for you. Check your phone book. The keys are transponder keys. Just call around to check which locksmiths are able to make one for you. They should delete the lost key code from your car's ECM/PCM and program in a new key for you. This ensures the lost key won't be able to be used to start your car. The locksmith will most likely be cheaper than Honda.
