Engine Stalling

2001 Civic EX Coupe, VTEC, 5-spd

Right after startup, I coast in 3rd gear down the relatively short hill my house sits on. I get to the bottom, hit the gas, and nothing...enging keeps running, but slooowly spools down as if I'm not touching the pedal...then...WHAMO! Gas hits, car lurches forward. Also happens if driving very slowly through an alley, or driveway or something.

Kinda makes me nervous...don't wanna blow clutch/engine when the gas kicks in real hard. Suggestions???

More specifically, it's more likely to happen in cold weather...but still present and "rough running" if right after startup. It happens as a result of "engine braking" and usually after startup when everything is "cold". It's not a downhill-only thing, it's happened when I've let up off the gas and didn't take it out of gear to slow down.
