my car was side swiped
Some ******* (probably driving a SUV) did that to my car in the parking lot and left without a notice. I didn't notice the damage in the dark but then I noticed it the next day. The damage was not severe but the marks were obvious, and a few dents to the door panel and the rear panel (2 dr coupe).
I went to a body shop and estimated repair is $2k. I have not called my insurance company yet. Would this be collision or comprehensive? Any way I have a $500 deductable, and I don't know if claiming it would affect my insurance rate. I could leave the marks alone - it doesn't seem to have structural damage and door opening isn't a problem. Any suggestions?

if only minor damage happened, i would keep it away from insurance. idk what your policy is, but if ur rates are gonna go up in the long term, might as well spend your pocket money to get it fixed.
but the body shop estimated 2k? must be body damage

That sucks dude. I would probably hunt down the ***hole and inflict great pain on them. But I digress... the damage would most likely be considered collision. If you report it and have your insurance cover the cost of repairs, your rate will go up. If you've got the money, pay for it yourself and you won't have to worry about increased rates.

grrrrr omfg I hate to hear this ****,
Im sure it was some woman yappin on her cell phone trying to back into a spot with her husbands range rover.
Probably not worth going to your insurance for, pay out of your pocket
Call your insurance broker and speak to the secratary, the one at my insurance agency is just as good as the real broker, try asking for advice off the record, they'll usually explain you your options and you can tell pretty easy if its worth it or not.
you know whats funny, the other day I was driving in this tiny parking garage under my gym, and I was laughing at how this one lady couldn't even park her huge Toyota Secoia SUV front end into a spot. As soon as I stepped out of my car she ran over to me and begged me to help her park it, she was pretty hot and Ive driven a lot of suv's being a valet, and reversed it perfectly into the spot.
This SUV had those mirrors that aim down when your in reverse, and even a REVERSE camera that I didnt notice until I was done reverseing using the trusty mirrors.
there are really people out there who just cant feel the size of their vechile. grrrr
go to a few body shops and get estimates. for $2k see if you can get a new door and a new rear panel?
Post some pics because if its just a few dents and marks, $2k seems a little high for a little dent pushing and painting, I mean 2k can get your entire car painted.
I once had my tail light pushed in by some truck trying to pull out of a spot, my rear panel was majorly pushed in and my tail light popped. I paid $400cdn to have the panel pulled (It was pushed in almost a foot), had the panel painted and tail light installed (ofcourse price of taillight not included)

Photos here
Sorry it took me a while to get the pictures taken. Thanks guys for the comments. The newest estimate is about $1.2K (sorry I originally put down 12K, forgot a little "."). I decided to get insurance involved. Of course I couldn't get much info about possible change to the premium, but I talked to several others, who agree that since I was not in the car and the car was parked when the incident occurred, it should not affect much. Besides, I haven't used my insurance for anything yet, so i guess this is what's getting insured for.
From now on, I will park as far from others as possible, and park only next to curb or small cars, or expensive sedans.
Photos attached here. A bit hard to see due to reflection, but the scraping and dent occur over a pretty extended length.

just call up dent wizard...
i think the body shop wants 2k 'cause they want to repaint your whole side. and you know how most body shop you take it to for an estimate, its always high.

Dent wizard can't do this. The damage is more obvious when one looks at it in person. My insurance has $300 deductable. Have you guys had experience of insurance premium going up because your parked car was damaged by uninsured motorist (i.e., took off without a notice)?

I corrected, it's 1.2K. my bad.
I guess it can vary quite a bit depends on the body shop, but sometimes the total area of the damage may matter, rather than the severety of the damage.
