New Engine, what kind do I get?

Hey all,

A few MONTHS ago my tensioner went out on my car, and the Honda Dealership wanted around $1200 to replace what went wrong and then rip apart the block to see if there was any damage. Yeah, right.

So my car's been sitting in my driveway rusting, I need to get this thing back on the road.

I did replace the Tensioner myself (with help) and it wouldn't start up at all, turned over but sluggishly, and you could clearly hear metal hitting metal. Not good. So I'm thinking I could go out and get a ton of work done on it just to diagnose the problem, or maybe I could run out and get a new engine.

I have a 2001 EX Sedan (55k miles), and I'm in California (I hear Cali engines need to be a little different than the 49 state cars, not sure).

I look on Ebay and see some pretty good deals, including this one:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...RK%3AMEWA%3AIT
That's a D17A2
There's also this one:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...RK%3AMEWA%3AIT
And I'm looking at whatever.

The question is WILL ONE OF THESE WORK in my car? Assuming the engine is alright.

Will someone that knows more than me please be able to help me.

And yes, I know that I could probably fix my engine for blah blah blah, but only ONE of the problems is that I don't know what's wrong with the stinking thing, it very well could be easier to buy another engine and pay for it to get dropped in my car. Lets hope...

Thanks!

All 7th gen Civic engines are compliant with the tougher smog laws in California, so you don't need to worry about that aspect of getting a new 7th gen engine outside of Cali.

Ugh. Quickness isn't something I *need* right now, I need better milage, and low costs... K20s seem like they cost quite a bit more than a regular d17, so I'm just looking at a d17. Plus, they are 2 liters instead of 1.7, so you can rightfully expect that they have a bit less gas milage... and I commute a pretty good distance 6 days a week.

My main question was: what's the difference between a a1, a2, a3, what do I need for my car (01 EX Sedan) and so on...?

Thanks for your input...

Took it to the Honda Dealership, they said that there was too many miles or something (55k?). They just said that there was no warranty for it.

What can you do? So I'm wondering if that first ebay link would work alright in my car...

thanks

Swap, fine.

Will any D17 do? I don't have the money for a k20.

Anyone? Thank you!

where the hell are your fuking warranties at? Doesnt anyone purchase extended warranties?

if you dont have one, you either pay $1000 to fix it, or 5k or so to do a swap.

hah yes the K series I will give you in writing is going to be worse on gas, but yeah it'll make your car fly.

only downside to doing a 1.7 swap is you pay all that labour swapping a new d17 in, most of us here would take that labour and k20 it :P

27/34 mileage for the K20. Honestly, I'd just put a D17 back in it. Since you have an EX, you need to look for a D17A2. If you have any more questions feel free to PM me.
