Need help diagnosing sound
I have a 2001 Manual Honda Civic Ex. It has 64k miles on it. It works like a charm. Never had a problem with it. All of a sudden about 5k miles ago I start hearing this sound. It only happens when the car is in gear and in the RPM range 3,500 through 3,800. It sounds like a rattling noise. When I rev my engine through that range and I am not in gear I dont hear the rattling noise. It only happens when I am in gear. It happens in all gears also. It is more noticible when I slow down (by braking, not using the engine and gears) and the car is still in gear. I am not sure what it is. What could it be? If you need more information I will be happy to provide it for you guys.
Thanks again in advance,
Oren

Well mine was actually a rattle coming from the engine. I swapped the cylinder head and it went away, but you could also try using 89 instead of 87 gas and changing the plugs. Also try some greased lightning brand fuel system treatment.

The wierd thing is:
1.) It ONLY happens while I am in gear. If I rev my engine while parked though that RPM range nothing is heard.
2.) Sound ONLY happns in that RPM range. No other range.
Thanks,
Oren

I still have the rattle I think you're talking about. It actually happened after the head swap, so I thought it was something loose. Can't figure out what tho. It also seems to go away once it gets warm.

Okay, I may have found a solution. Do you have a neuspeed strut bar? Mine was hitting the R134A refrigerant hose and causing it to vibrate. I put some soft foam between it and the sound went away I think. It could also be the hose touching the hood if you don't have the bar installed.
