why wont car hold 1st to the redline in auto?

but wouldnt it be better to get that extra 500 revs to drop back down inthe next gear higher up the revband, which is then closer to the peak power? isnt that why all cars have their redlines right above their max power point?
the vic makes most power at like 6500rpm, but redline is 6800...
