Transmission slipping - automatic

First off - I tried searching for this exact problem for the past 1/2 hour. No luck

Secondly - My transmission seems to be slipping when i first put it into D after I start the car. It'll usually take a couple more seconds or i'll have to fiddle with the shifter to get the transmission to sense it. I tested it while driving down hills this week as well - I would put it in neutral and then put it back into D and it would happen every once in a while. And the car warming up has no effect on whether or not it slips. After the car correctly senses the shifter in D and works - it never slips out. It's just the initial shift into D when it sometimes doesn't work right away. It almost seems like some kind of sensor isn't working right or something but hell, I don't know.

So, I'm going to take it in to get fixed. I'm wondering if anyone has had this happen to them in the past and had it resolved. I would just like to educate myself as much as I can before I take it in.

Thanks you guys for your input.

It's completely normal for it to take a few secs to engage the tranny when shifting into D. My 02 does it all the time. After changing the fluid with honda atf, it shifted into drive faster. Now it's been a year since the change and has gotten worse again. Change the fluid and see what happens to yours. Fluid is cheap (make sure to get honda atf) and drain/refill by removing the drain bolt. There are actually metal shavings stuck to the magnet plug that needs to be cleaned for the first change.

When I changed my ATF, I also changed the tranny bolt. Only $10 from honda. I always change the bolts when doing fluid changes, that is the oil and tranny fluid.

Yeah, but my car only has 3000 miles on it. It's less than 3 months old... this can't be normal right?

Someone said he canged the fluid at 1500 miles and got out all the metal pieces. It's a good idea to flush some of the fluid when the car is new. That metal causes damage to the gears overtime. Just change the fluid and see.

Check out my post... ATF Change more often...I changed my fluid out twice, once at 1500 miles and another time at 5,000 miles...this takes out a lot of the metal in the tranny. Then change it every 15,000 miles after this...it will save you a lot of hassle in the long run. Also, make sure not to add too much fluid, you need to get the level correct...somewhere between the L and H on the dipstick is fine, but the closer to the L when the car is cold, the better. Good luck!

Yeah it helps when pushing the car or on long trips. When it's cold, I think it makes the shifts harsh.

my cousin used to do neutral drops on his old car.... 1/2 year later, trans fluid always needs to be refilled.

Lol. Just tighten the throttle cable if you want better pedal response from a stop.

That is pretty normal. Your sopose to give both kinds of transmission a couple seconds before your shift into gear.

Why would you want to do that anyway?

neutral drops mess up ur tranny..
if ur gunna wanna burnout or "peel-out" i would just press on the brake and rev high and let go..this wears out ur brakes..buts its better to wear ur brakes down then to have a f***** up tranny? right?

Um, stepping on the brake while revving in drive will ruin the torque converter. Just tighten the throttle cable if you want more response. It's probably loose anyway.

That shouldn't have done much damage, but these new trannys can't take much. May want to have it looked at. Maybe the tranny is okay, and you just need some parts.

Well I just checked my transmission fluid and its really low. I thought when i get my car serviced that they are suppose to check all the fluids? Some service that honda puts out huh. Well i hope this is the problem and not my stupidty of doing stuipd neutral drops. Oh yah there is also a loud whiney noise coming from the engine? I belive this could be the transmission pump making the noise? Is it because of Low fluid?

Transmission pump???never heard of that before.

But, as for the low tranny fluid level, either you have a crack in your transmision case and leaking the fluid or the dealer didn't put in enough fluid when you got your PDI (post delivery inspection)/dealer service. Fluid does not evaporate so you should have this problem looked at ASAP.

Yeah tranny fluid doesn't just disappear and shouldn't have to be refilled all the time. Something is wrong, and a low fluid level seriously messes up the tranny. That noise you hear could be the bands burning in the tranny. It's not coming from the engine, either.

One mechanic said it could be my torque converter. They took a sniff of the transmission fluid and nothign smelled burnt. Can neutral drops ruin the torque converter? Well if my transmission is a goner i might as well do a manual swap.
