humming noise

My girlfriends car is starting to sound like it has a bad wheel bearing. It sounds sometimes like its in the front and other time in the back. I honestly dont think that it is because it doesnt change in sound when you weave back and forth. Now in my 6 years as a mechanic it should change sound if you turn. The only other thing i can think of is maybe there is something underneath that is catching the air and making a noise or the exhaust but it doesnt respond to rpm. Any ideas on where to start I would be grateful.

usually bad wheel bearing will make a thumping sound noise when you start to break and when driving, not a humming noise. As far as what it is, we need more details. It could be anything.

Im going to buy a floor jack and put the tires in the air and spin each one and hold the spring to see if that is what it is. Wheel bearing do not thump when you hit the brakes. They hum like a **** and they get louder when you turn left or right dependging upon which one is bad. I also noticed that thier is an exhaust rattle. So i also have to check that because it does also sound like a couple of sounds that are making noises that might be put together to make the one i am chasing.

I have checked and its probably the road surface up here. We live in eastern mass and she took a trip to RI yesterday and it was no where near as loud. My Regal Gs is even loud on the roads up here and i know that thier is nothing at all wrong with that car. The tires are a little chopped and that may be what is making the noise worse. It has been getting better as she drives it also so i think most of the noise was in the tires.

Do you have stock Firestones? Mine hum like crazy on some roads to the point where I have to turn the radio off to see if something is wrong. Then they are quiet on other roads.

No i wouldnt let her buy firestones again. I made her get Micheln Pilots. Im not sure but i think its the roads up here because my Buick never made noise until i moved up here. I might be the wheel bearing in its beging stages so im definitly going to keep an eye on it.

How about you just take it to a shop and have them check your car out.

Damn! Any updates?? My girlfriend's car is making the same sound. I thought it was the stock firestones. Change them out to another set and still noisey like heck. It sounds like it coming from the front left side only.
