2004 EX Running Hot
2004 EX Running Hot
Hello everyone,
I have a 2004 Civic EX that I bought new in February. I have had no issues with the car until I brought it in to the dealership for an oil change at 3,750 miles. About 2 days after this, I noticed that the car runs hotter than normal. The temperature needle stays about halfway up the guage ( I am almost positive that it used to only go 1/4 of the way up) and the car only takes about 90 seconds or less to get to this temp.
Is this normal and I just never noticed it before? Thank you in advance for any advice you may have to offer.

hey welcome to the site Nemo
I'm sure thats normal. Mine stays around the middle too, but it takes up around 5 minutes to get there *during idle*. Do you rev or start driving as soon as you start the car? If you do, then the oil gets to normal temp faster when the engine is working. Some people like to 'warm up' the engine. There's different opinions whether it makes a difference or not.

it should be fine, most cars run at the middle of the guage. If it starts going higher make sure they put the right amount of oil in, or there are no leaks. Also check the coolant level. But odds are it is fine because most cars run at the middle of the guage.
The temp. gauge should run a little bit less than half way when your engine is completely warmed-up. Anything higher than half way should consider attention. Many things can cause this problem. To name a few: Different oil, low coolant, blown head gasket, change timing belts, faulty thermostat, faulty water pump...

maybe its because its warmer out now because its summer so it heats your engine, therefore making the needle move higher. I got my 04 civic in nov and its always stayed at around middle range except when it was really cold during the winter.
Yup. although i wouldn't be too anxious because it went like 1 notch above the middle or anything. And driving hard during regular stop and go drving (ie: shifting at 4k+ rpms) would make it go up since the oil is going to get a bit more heated running at higher rpms. But it should go down in the end.
Also its better not to drive too hard (3k+ shifts) until the engine warms up.
