Safety Recall ALL 2001 civic's some 2002 civic and Hatchbacks

As of April 5 2004 all 2001 civic and some 2002 civic's owners(depending on vin breaks) will recieve notifcations about the service bulletin 04-015 SAFETY RECALL : combination Light switch. Let me type out what honda has notified me about from work. "The low-beam terminal on the headlight wire harness can overheat and may cause the low beam headlights to fail without warning. Although the high-beam position still remains operational, an unexpected loss of low beams could result in a crash". ( American honda Motor Co inc)

The first one we did today looked pretty bad, the connector was melted and the tip of the wire was black. When you bring the car in for the recall you will be getting a new headlight combination switch along with a new connector and wire (if needed). If your cars number 16p headlight wire is discolored from heat damage we will replace it by cutting off about 150mm of the orginal wire and will connect a new wire using a splice connector. The reason why im informing you guys about this problem is because I dont want to see any one get hurt because of loss of headlights.
Here are the vehicles affected
2001 Civic : ALL

2002 civic :
2-door
From VIN 1HGEM2...2L000001 thru
1HGEM2...2L024169

4-DOOR
FROM VIN 1HGES1...2L000001 THRU
1HGES1...2L024203

FROM VIN 1HGES2...2000001 THRU
1HGES2...2L028089

FROM VIN 2HGES...2H500001 THRU
2HGES...2H530552

FROM VIN JHMES1...2S000001 THRU
JHMES1...2S004507

FROM VIN JHMES2...2S000001 THRU
JHMES2...2S002838

HATCHBACK
FROM VIN SHHEP3...2U300001 THRU
SHHEP3...2U300222

CNG
FROM VIN 1HGEN2...2L000001 THRU
1HGEN2...2L000181

2000-01 INSIGHT : ALL

Again
Notifications to civic owners will begin mailing on april 5 and contiune through the month of april. The notification letter to insight owners will be mailed later.

Hondas repair strategy
The repair is to replace the combination light switch, the RED/WHITE wire in the headlight wire harness and if needed , the 16P headlight wire harness connector. For repair , VIN and warrentry information , refer to service bulletion 04-015, safety recall : Combination Light Switch.

Exclamation

hi & thanx jeff 4 this information,
but what i wanna ask does this applied on the middle east models too ??
like in the arabian gulf i never heared about a recall on a car unless i go & have a bigh fight with the dealer in bahrain, then oly my problem will be fixed in not that professional way

& to add on this i had my headlights changed 8 monthes ago coz of a change in the lenss color & few months later i found that i get weak light & what was written in the report that head light wiers found lose & re-connected !!!!

First the struts go and now this. I thought Civic was supposed to be an exceptional car, not just a fair to middlin car. I don't know if I will be sticking with Honda after this.

My warranty is up in about 700 kms so I should probably check my VIN.

I think where it is a safety recall, it still has to be covered after warranty expiration. After a certain number of years I don't know if safety recalls are still done though. Older cars don't seem to get recalled, when you would expect the recalls to increase. Plus if the components are failing for safety issues that maybe other non safety issues will arise too and as everything starts to go on these cars after 3 years I think we will be stuck with the high repair costs.

Just call them up and tell them you want to get your Shiznit fix on the recall. Hopefully they won't ask any question. but make sure you comlain a little about the inconvience it has been for you, that the part broke. Then they should take care of you.

it can definitely happen - it did to me. i never lost use of my low beams, but was replacing my OEM headlights w/projectors. When i pulled the plug from the right side bulb, i was kinda shocked. Half of the plug was melted. still workable though. glad i read this thread

I talked to honda and they said they were going to send me the recall, but never did, can I still take it to honda and have it replaced for free cause my headlights go out so often.

hrmmm.....i'll check my VIN tomorrow, but this is interesting, because i've now gone through FOUR sets of lightbulbs, all because the lowbeam had gone out. the last set i had in it still worked, but it wouldn't pass inspection because they said they weren't street legal lights (even though they said DOT right on them, and the package said street legal on it.....) but either way, they said i had to buy their lights (i prolly coulda gone somewhere else to get them for less, but how could i get there, they put a VOID inspection sticker on it, and i could get ticketed for driving it....grrrr) so anyway, i had to spend the 30 bucks or so on THEIR lights, then they wanted FIFTY DOLLARS!!! yes, 50 bucks to install them....i was like...umm......how about NO.....gimmie back my key and let me go put them in.....and then about 1 min later, i came back in, gave them back my key, and told them i was done, and the guy was like "already?!".....(that kinda worries me that he expected it to take a long time......<rolls eyes>....) so then i sat in the waiting room for ANOTHER hour and a half so i could wait for somone to go look at them and see that i put their lights in them. grrrrrrrrr......

I just got my recall in the mail today..The Dealer shouldn't give me any hassle because I have Aftermarket TYC Projector headlights should they? Because the headlight assembly has nothing to do with the actual harness..

I've got TYCs also; I doubt they'll make a big deal of it since the coupler is completely independent of the acutal headlight bulb. AS far as finding out for sure if your Civic is affected, call Honda America (1-800-999-1009) & they'll run your VIN to see. If it is, they'll help you find the closest dealer to fix the shiznit & will give you their number.

Is there any TSB document (pdf file format) somewhere that we can use to show it to the dealer? otherwise the dealer will keep putting it off.

I seem to have gotten this letter a while back, problem is, I never did take my car to the dealer yet. I'm at war with crown honda in St. Pete, FL so I'm going to another dealer in another city (clearwater). I'm scheduled for today and hopefully it isn't too bad. I also have TYC's on but they shouldn't say anything because the Honda dealers have started selling TYC accessories lately.

Hope they actually do anything though, rather than not take me seriously and dismiss me off to go.
