My question is, was the drivers side brake pads worn more then the passenger side? You said it was torn but did it show damage from heat? If so i recomend replacing both front calipers. Its possible that the drivers side caliper was dragging causing the excessive heat and then resulting in the boot to come apart.
As far as changing the boot they typically are not too tought to install see picture below
Part = 368867 001 CALIPER SET, FR. (AD51-14) NO COLOR $13.01

Changing the boot on a caliper isn't an easy job, but it is do-able. Best thing to do is remove it from the brake line, take the whole thing apart, clean every part, replace all the seals/boots and put it back together. That's basically what you're getting when you buy a rebuilt caliper.
