how bout a better description of the sound. Where from the engine bay is it coming from? What does it sound like? Is it your header shield rattling against the header?
more info is needed.

Its probably your exaust hitting the bottom of your car, Check to see if any of the mounts are torn, and check to see if the pipe is bent. Does it happen more often when its wet out? if it does then I can pretty much gaurentee thats the problem.
also if you have custom piping they may not have left enough clearance.

i have the same problem but i've been too lazy about it to really fix it.
it started after i put on my custom piping, and i would always hear a sharp rattling noise whenever i started up my car first thing in the morning. ithe sound would get really loud if i was at low rpms (1500) or if i was taking a corner really quick.
but now i hardly ever hear it, i think the piping just needed to settle onto the car.
like zzyzx said, i'm pretty sure it's just your exhuast..don't sell your car just because of that!

Do you guys have custom intakes? I had that same problem and for the longest time I could not figure out what was doing it. The mechanic said it could be several things: throttle intake, transmission, exhaust, etc. Well all of this started after I install my aem sri about 6 mths ago. So a couple of weeks ago I took my sri off and checked the throttle body and everything looked ok so I put the intake back on and made sure it was not hitting anything. But this time instead of taking out the fuse to reset the computer for timing I just unplugged the batter for 30 mins. Then I came back and hooked the battery back up and ran the care in neutral for 40 mins and guess what the problem was gone. My guess is that my air intake timing was off and I was not getting enough air in the engine causing my valves and pistons to shake in low rpms (1st and 2nd gear). Hope this helps some of you. Also I heard the throw-out bearing in the transmission could be going bad, luckily that was not my case.

I have the same problem! Sometimes its there sometimes its not!. I hear a hi-pitch rattling sound coming from underneath the engine. I think either the cat or the down pipe from the headers is getting loose. I also sometimes hear that "water" sound when im accelerating like guam said. I plan on going to get my screws re-tigtned and get everything checked out. Just wondering, how many miles do you have on your cars that have this problem? Also, do you have i/h/e? As for me i have 82,XXX, with a HKS Hi-Power rear section, and thats it.
I need TP for my bunghole

I have a custom exhaust and had the terrible noise from under the car.
I looked and notice a tension bolt broke.
That was a $20 fix at the shop and $20 bolt+spring to replace.
My exhaust appeared to make the annoting noise still and yes it was very embarassing.
I then grabbed the and shook the exhaust violently and found that one of my hangers on the exhaust had enough room to tap against the exhaust at times. I had it tack welded and the exhaust again is music to my ears.

i had that same noise...its the cat hitting back and forth under your car...its gone now...u try getting new hangers for it...i went underneath my car and the cat moves sideways especially when you're hitting the corners hard or just driving in general...you'll notice it quickly...so yeah try the hangers...and bigger piping doesn't help either cause for some reason it makes the cat hit back and forth easier...with the OEM piping it doesn't hit anymore...there's your fix..if that was the problem in the first place...and don't sell your car cause of that problem...

Meezo, check to make sure that your airbox is solidly connected together, and that the lid (which you remove to change the filter) is securely fastened. If it sounds like more of a whine, it might be your power steering pump. I'm told it makes a little noise, but still functions fine.

My car goes in Tuesday to Watson Engineering http://www.watsoneng.com/ to have a new pipe made from my cat to my silencer. I looked under mine and my exhaust is not even close to being in the channel under the car it is so jacked up. My pipe is also smashed fromt a speed bump and fat asses in the car.
