When to change brake pads

2k1 auto ex coupe, has about 30K, brakes start to squeak.

When (or at what milage) did you first change your brake pads? I know everyone drives differently, and stop and go traffic will make that things worse. So please provide that info along too.

thanks.

I think I've read in the past anywhere from 14K to 40K or more. Its all depends on how you drive, your driving conditions and what type of driving you do.

For a first timer, Go to an auto zone. Ask to look at the brake pad for your car. Get a good measurement of how much paddding is on the pad itself. Its roughly and inch or more. You can use your eye, but it would be a good idea to mark it on a piece of paper. Go home take off one tire and compare the markings to the amount of padding left on your pad. If its about half or less, change them. Its not completely necessary at half-way, just more of a precaution. After this you'll be able to guesstimate when it is time to change brake pads for yourself.

I have almost 26k and my brakes are fine. You'll know when it is time to change them because they will make a lot of noise. You don't need to change them before that time.

jes had to change my pads at a little over 18 k....im not sure but i think the brake pads have a sensor ..kinda like a piece of metal that sticks out that will start screeching even when you dont press the brakes...when that happens, you still have a bit of pad left, just annoying sound tells you when its time....

I hav 116k on my 2k1. CHanged the front pads to AEM at 85k. The rear's are still the orrignial. Basicly listen to your brakes, and learn how they feel. There isnt really a set milage. My rear brakes are still good as new too.

Changed my brakes for the first time at 65,000 miles.

how long your pads last depends greatly on what type of driving you do. I drive on the freeway alot, so my brakes will last longer then some one who does stop and go city driving.

MY brakes have 24,000 miles on them, when I checked them at 24,000 I had worn through the slotted area on the brake pad, which means I probably have about 20% pad material left, however, the pads themselves have been overheated several times, and no longer function properly, that's why i'll be replacing them with EBC redstuff as soon as my new rotors get here (which are totally screwed... even had them resurfaced at 10,000 miles...) anyway, the moral of the story is, you need to change your brake pads when they stop working properly, if they're squeeking that's telling you to change them. If they're like mine, and no longer grip the rotor as they used too, you need to change them.... And when you do, do yourself a favor and get some brembo blanks off of tirerack, or buybrakes.com

yup got my car state inspected and was told that in about 2-4 months i should change my brake pads. i dont plan on spending big money on expensive EBC, AEM,Bear, etc pads. ill just hit up an autoparts store and get some pads there.

and like everyone already said, changing your pads depends on how you drive. the manual only gives you an example of an average time to change the pads.

i recomend getting AEM. they are the same company that manufactures the honda oem pads. So you know you have the oem quality, with a touch of aem's performence.

^^^ that's the problem with AEM, (ie, they manufacture the OEM brakes), the oem pads are trash, you can fade them in no time flat....

Thanks everyone for the comments.

I've done some minor maintenance things on my own (air and cabin filters etc.), but changing braking pads seems too dangerous a thing to handle.

As someone once asked, if speed kills, does brake save life? I'm sure it does, and won't trust myself to learn to do a proper brake job.

Honestly, learn to do them. You'll save a Sh## load of money and your friends will appreciate it when you come over and do it for them for free. It is as easy as changing oil.
