Rattle at 3000 RPM HELP!!!

Hey everyone,

I wanted to see if anyone had experienced this same issue that I am with my 2003 SI Veloz. I have an AEM Cold Air Intake on my engine, and in the past little while I have noticed a deep rattling sound developing when decelerating. It is always at the exact same time that it occurs which is at 3000 RPM. If I rev the engine past 3000 RPM, it will happen once I take my foot off the gas. When decelerating, same thing, once I hit about 2700 RPM it goes away and my car sounds fine.

If I am accelerating with my car and it hits 3000 RPM, there is no noise. This has me absolutley perplexed???

Does anyone have any ideas. I am going to be making an appointment with Honda shortly, and if I can point them in the right direction that would be great.

Thanks to all who reply in advance.
Randy

Check the cai piping. See if you can find any rubbing on the intake. They may/may not say something about the cai on your car. Did the car make this noise before the cai?

I do not have a custom exhaust so it isn't that, and I have checked the stock exhaust as well. No movement or holes in the piping, if there was a hole in the piping, it would make a popping sound and not a rattling sound.

It did not make this sound initially with the stock parts on. But at the same time, it did not make the noise when I initially put the CAI on. I have had a CAI on for the last year, and there was no rattling at that point. it has only started recently. I have checked the CAI for movement and honestly can barely move the sucker, I can't seem to find an area that it is rubbing either.

Any other ideas. To be more specific, rattle probably isn't the best description, it is kind of a deep toned grinding / rattling. Basically double to the tone of your engine, and that's noise I get at 2700 - 3000 RPM. Its strange. Its like my engine has bass at this point.

I hope that describes the sound better.

Yep, I had the exact same problem with my 82 Accord. And ONLY when de-celerating. Unfortunately I never found it. All I can tell you is that something is touching the frame. The engine tilts one way when you speed up, and the other when you slow down. Keep that in mind when looking for the rattle, cause it won't do it standing still, does it? Check the motor mounts, btw. Maybe one is torn, allowing too much movement.

Check the CAI where it goes thru the wheel well. It may have slightly changed its posistion over time and is rubbing. mine does this sometimes if i re-install the cai witht he pipe twisted one direction more then it should be when i tighten the clamps

Tinman

Yo Tinman,

I can actually duplicate the problem even standing still. All I have to do is rev the RPM's up to 3000 RPM.

You're lucky then. I tore my hair out on that. I finally just ignored it. But in your case, have someone hold the gas while you go hunting.
Good luck.
