Alignment?

I have a 2003 Civic with 12,000 miles.

Just had it into the dealer for a tire rotation/oil change.

They say the front tires have 1/4 of the tread left and it needs an alignment since the front tires are wearing somewhat unevenly (Firestone FR690s).

Should the car need an alignment this early, and am I crazy for thinking the tires should last longer? I drive relatively tame, never race/purposely spin tires/corner hard/etc.

If the tires are wearing out un-evenly then yes you need a alignment. A lot of times a brand new car will be out of alignment because of the way its shipped. They strap down new cars really hard on the ships and trucks, which can cause the car to go out of alignment. Plus just everyday driving over a period of time will do it too.

(Firestone FR690s) are very soft tires.... they wear out quickly, but you need to get alignment done!!!

Those stock Firestones are some of the worst tires in existence. No grip, non-existent tread life, deadly in ice and snow.

With 1/4 left, should consider getting new tires along with your alignment.

Any suggestions on what tires to get? Stock 15" wheels, I drive in a lot of snow but don't want snow tires. I'm also dirt poor.

The Falken ZIEX ZE-512 tires have been rated very good by a recent Consumer's Report review. They are dirt cheap too - $34/each at www.hptire.net for the 185/65-15 size, which fits your Civic.

BTW - the HPTIRE place is based in NY, so shipping should be cheap for you.

i gotta get my car aligned too...but i just put on my rev model VI last week and i noticed my car pulls hard to the right, also when i took the stock tires off the right front wheel was wore down more in the middle than the left

how much does alignment cost, $50?

tires are worth spending money on, how much is up to you. i got michelin X1s, because they are supposed to last for 60k miles, and they have good wet/dry handling and braking. i just use my car for regular transportation, but i like having good tires for interstate driving. my handing has improved tremendousy because of the tires, and from ensuring that i keep 32 psi in the winter, when tires lose more air.
