2012 Civic LX Sedan- 1.4L Automatic (NJ)
I had OBD code 0717 Input Sensor signal and checked Input sensor and it was within appropriate limits. I cleaned the MAF and EGR valve, checked the air intake and air throttle body housing (rubber like boot) from and to the air box and found no damage or breaks in rubber. However, the wiring to the Input sensor was not registering. I couldn't find any wire damage at input sensor. In having a honda dealer mechanic test it, he said there was wire damage from field mice or squirrels in the wiring near the input speed sensor (didn't say exactly where-in that pigtail, or in the main harness itself). I asked if they could splice new wire in to repair it, and was told "no", the whole main engine wiring harness needs to be replaced. I was quoted $550.00 for the part (main engine wiring harness); and $1600.00 labor at ($160.00 per hour).
1. I wanted to know is it normal to replace the whole main engine harness or could wire be spliced in to repair it?
2. And....if the whole harness needs to be replaced, is this a reasonable cost for the part and labor for this model Civic?
I just want to have a better understanding of the costs and want to know if this is reasonable, low, high or exorbitant. Thank you .

I'm unfamiliar with a 1.4 in the 9th gens. Perhaps you provided the wrong displacement?
Either way, the only thing I can observe that's abnormal is the labor rate. Mind you, I'm not in the US, but $160 per hours seems insane. As far as the actual time, that seems accurate. I wouldn't mess with splicing in new wires because it runs the risk of creating new issues.

US hybrid is a 1.5, maybe a typo.
the other end of the dealership customer are the ones that would be outraged to have splicing made into their car's wiring harness. Dealers need to deal with that as well.
if you want to splice wires, it is easier to get from regular shops instead of a dealer.
There is always chances that the splices will be a ticking time bomb, it could tomorrow or 5 years from now that the repair can cause issues with sensors (they are delicate), shorts, etc.
Depending on the amount of damage from rodent, Dealer will not want to deal with potential issues.
check in this site about how many connectiosn are there in a Hybrid - looks like it is a mess of miles of wires in one car alone

Thank you for the feedback. It seems like splicing is not recommended in this situation. I haven't seen the damaged wire or harness, it's what I'm being told. So, depending on where it is in the harness, replacing the entire harness is probably better. The labor /time seemed high to me but I guess it is what is is. If consensus is the time of 10 hours is reasonable, then all my questions are answered and I have a better understanding. Thanks again. If anyone else has additional thoughts I'd like to hear them as well.(correction: Engine is 4 cyl. 1.8L)

you can always take to an independent shop and have them spliced.
it carries risks, but if you are aware and want to take it...
