Sometimes car acts like key isn't forward

So the car works just fine, but then about half the time I go out to start it, I turn the key forward and it acts like the key isn't turning forward. None of the gauge cluster lights up. But then, sometimes it does work...and it seems like every time I reset the ecu, or unplug power and then power it back on, it allows me to start it.

I'm almost thinking some sort of anti theft thing is kicking in and now allowing me to do anything. Could it be as simple as the ignition switch is dying? It just doesn't seem like it because when it does work, it acts like nothing is going on. Sometimes when I go to start it, and it won't start, I just walk away for five minutes, come back and it powers up and starts just fine. Super confusing. Any thoughts? Thanks.

Does nothing come on when the key is in the accessory or on positions? It is normal for electronics to shutoff when in the cranking position but not in the others.

If everything is shutting off when trying to crank but the starter isn't engaging try putting the car in neutral and then try (assuming auto transmission).

So when you put the key in the ignition the gauges lightly light up, I'm assuming it's just recognizing the radio signal from the key at that point. It's the same thing it does always whether the car starts or not.

Then when the key is turned forward to try and start it, when it doesn't start that dimly light gauge cluster area just stays the same. None of the individual lights, light up. This is the same no matter what position the key is in.

But when it does work, if you put the key forward in accessory or on position all the gauge cluster lights show up and it shows the individual things like the battery light, stuff like that.

It just seems so random for when turning the key forward makes it work or not.

So, I guess the answer is no, nothing comes on when the key is in any position, just the regular dim looking gauge area, unless the car does start, then yes it lights up everything like normal.

I would suspect a faulty ignition switch.
