Bearing replacement
Bearing replacement
I'm going to be taking on the project of replacing a bearing in my front left wheel. Been getting the airplane noise that seems to be originating from the front left side typical of bearing failure. I have had bearings fail before (driving on the beach will do this to you), but now I'm ambitious enough to want to do this myself as this is probably something I should become familiar with in this sandy and wet area.
What is the recommended course of action? Change bearing and hub? Or just the bearing? Can I rent the tool and do it all myself or should I have it pressed in at the shop? Any part recommendations?

Re: Bearing replacement
I'd do the bearing and hub.
not to bad to do yourself, or just bring the knuckle to a shop, they'll do it for you pretty cheap

Re: Bearing replacement
If I wanted to do the whole job, I'd need one kit to separate the hub, and one kit to put it back? I'm a little confused as to what I need.

Re: Bearing replacement
Silde hammer to pull the hub, bearing puller to remove the old bearing and install the new bearing and hub
Re: Bearing replacement
So I figured I'd reply to this original thread. I changed out the bearing, but it didn't do much to stop the noise Completely (albeit the bearing was indeed bad) The sound is a woohing almost helicopterish sound, and is noticeably louder on the driver side front than the passenger side. Can this be the CV shaft? I looked into the differential, but this car does not have one separate from the trans. Also no driveshaft...I know that there are bearings inside the CV shaft that could go bad as well. Any ideas? I may pay a shop to diagnose the issue before I throw another $100 at solving a problem I don't have.
Re: Bearing replacement
Here is a clip of the sound. It's most notable at 30mph and 45mph. Sort of like an undulating helicopter sound, but quick. Obviously inside the car, the sound is much more pronounce.
