2011 civic accelerated backwards in drive mode
Hello,
I have no clue a car could do this. So Pretty shaken with today's experience.
The civic LX is really not that old or used. Its a 2011 LX with 75k miles on it. Automatic transmission. Haven't seen any issues with the car so far.
Today I went to visit a hilly state park. After parking for a while (not really sloppy at the spot I parked), when I got back in the car to pull out and start my uphill drive back, I noticed that after reversing from the spot and putting the car in drive mode "D", the car still accelerated backwards. I got scared and tried D1 and D2 and tried to see if that would help. The car still accelerated backwards when I gently pressed the accelerator. I was just lucky that it didn't hit the car behind.
Some gentlemen around came to help. They asked me to put the car in Neutral and pushed it back into the spot. I turned off the engine and let it sit 5 minutes and restarted the car. that fixed the issue and I drove back home.
The experience has really got me worried now.
1) Can this happen while the car has been running for a while and I stop at a traffic light? If the car behind me is close enough, I am worried I might reverse and hit it.
2) I was told by one gentleman who helped me that it could be a transmission issue. I have heard such issues can run up a really high bill. Considering my car is really worth only like $6k, should I even consider doing it or just dispose it? I like the car and don't really want to get a new one.
3) Any remote chance it is an isolated incident? (I am just hoping against hope here) I know no one can predict such things. The fact that a car can just go in the opposite direction by itself anytime it wants to sounds very risky to me.
4) Don't they have some sort of a safety mechanism to prevent such things? just not moving would be much safer than moving in the opposite direction.

Re: 2011 civic accelerated backwards in drive mode
Are you sure it accelerated when you hit the gas or wasn't just rolling back? You said you pressed the gas lightly. If I was on a hill I would give it more gas then normal to overcome the hill. Not saying it didn't accelerate but it's an odd problem.

Yep. It did start rolling back as soon as I let go of the break. To make it move forward, I started pressing the accelerator. But it just accelerated backwards.
