Valve adjustment necessary?
Valve adjustment necessary?
Hi all- New to the forum. I have a 2012 Civic Lx with 122k on it. It runs well and the engine has no unusual valve train noise. I was researching how to adjust the valves, because they had never been done before on this car. I called a Honda dealership to get a quote, and the service guy said he had worked there several years and he didn’t recommend doing it unless there was a lot of valve clatter noise. He said,“it’s just something (adjust valves)we just don’t do often at all.” I found it interesting since it’s the first time a service person has ever said that they don’t recommend maintenance. Anyways, I had a 2007 civic LX that had 165K on it when I got rid of it and I never adjusted the valves and never had any issues. I get the feeling that 90% plus of civic owners never adjust the valves and go 2 to 300,000 miles without issues. I know that a loose valve will make noise, but a tight valve doesn’t and a tight valve can cause the valve to burn over time. I was just trying to get a sense of how many people out there actually bother to adjust their valves and is it necessary if I just do normal commuting, don’t abuse the car, and do regular maintenance on it? Thanks in advance!
Re: Valve adjustment necessary?
I did mine when I hit 150k miles when I was doing other maintenance. My dad's at like 250k miles on his focus and the valve cover has never come off. Maintenance plays a large factor.
If you want to check the clearances, it shouldn't be that difficult to remove the valve cover.
