FYI: Pinstripe Removal, Best Technique
So I bought my Black 01 Civic just recently used and it came with a decal pinstripe. I finally couldn't take it anymore and decided to remove it this week. I did a search and tried all these methods. Here's my ranked compare:
1) Hot Sunny Day (BEST):
I started the pinstripe removal on Monday, it was hot and sunny out. I started with the rear pieces. Took them off in less than 5 mins. The goo was almost non-exisitant.
2) Blow Dryer (Okay):
So I didn't finish on Monday and did the doors on Tuesday. It wasn't as sunny or hot so I used the blow dryer. It was okay, but the middle setting isn't hot enough and the hot setting is too hot. I don't recommend this method.
3) Warm/Hot Water (Great):
So I decided to finish the job today and found hondah1's method of using warm water. I had a friend pour the water over the stripe as I removed it. It worked great, almost better than just having a hot car.
So those are the methods. I didn't get to try but I bet using warm water and having it be a hot sunny day where the car is hot would be the best of both worlds.
I removed the any good with a clean tarry cloth and some elbow grease. I tried goo-gone and wd40. Nothing really beats just rubbing it off. Finished it off with some Meguiars Gold Class Shampoo, Cleaner Wax, and Gold Glass Wax. You can't even tell there ever was a pinstripe.
Final Note: I have a black car and didn't notice any color difference. The car is two years old and the pinstripe was factory. Where I live it doesn't really get too hot in the summers so if you live somewhere that's always sunny, I'd remove a little bit of first and make sure the paint underneath isn't a different color.
