new wheel cleaner

I've heard, i haven't tried, but i've heard that using toothpaste will help to remove some of the brake dust and dirt and tar gunk that gets down in the crevices of the wheel? anyone else tried this?

I haven't tried that but I would be a little skeptical. I just stick with old fashioned soap and water-works for me.
