Well from what i've heard it doesn't, ScratchX is an abrasive product but not enough to be able to rub away your clearcoat and hurting your paint. If the scratch is on top of the clear coat it will rub that down so that the scratch disappears, taking away a very minimum amount. Just don't put all your force into it and rub for hours and you should be fine.

^^thats right, all your doing is leveling out the clear coat. It wont look any different than the rest of the paint. You wont be able to cause any damage for a few reasons. 1. The amount of clear coat you remove per application is microscopic.
2. Meguiars uses diminishing abrasive, so at a certain point the abrasives break down into what is essentially a polish.

You could apply it many times and should still never actually get through the clear down to the paint itself.

Wait, did you say the the surrounding paint was fading or the spot? If you meant the surrounding paint was fading then maybe you just need to clay bar, clean, polish, and wax your car? If you meant that the spot you used the scratchx on faded then i'm not sure about that, but it shouldn't take away anything, just a very very small amount of clearcoat. How old is your friends car? If its old then it may not have a clear coat on it, but if its fairly new at all then there is most likely a clearcoat. Just my opinion.

i dont think the warranty covers it from chips or damage to the paint but its worth trying. you need to get rid of the rust though or it will spread inside the paint.

If you use ScratchX like it's SUPPOSED to be used, and not how you or your buddy, THINKS it's suppose to be used, then you shouldn't have a problem. Just make certain that you CLEAN the area first. Then clean off after and protect the area AFTER (your normal polish/wax routine). In fact if it was me, I'd just detail the car the day that I planned to use ScratchX or any other product like it. And polish and wax afterwards.
