Rep Power: 0 Here is what we use at work for scratches. This stuff works great.
This is our procedure:
Wash, Clay, Wash, allow to dry, Buff with cutting pad and Perfect-it III, Re-Buff with Polishing pad and good carnuba wax (Pro P-35-H SATIN CREME) , Re-Wash to remove extra wax.
Cars come out looking great. Highy reflective.
But as I've said in other threads if you're not experienced with a buffer. Take it to someone who is.

Rep Power: 0 The basic steps are:
1) Clean - Wash and Clay
2) Compound - Cutting Pad
3) Polish - Polishing Pad
4) Protect - Wax
Some people wash after claying their car, but I don't really see the need. I just use a
quick detailing spray to remove the clay lubricant after #1.
3M Perfect It is more abrasive than 3M SMR. The PI-III would work better on the deeper scratches.

I used 3M SMR and it seems to get out swirls, and some light sratches, but you'll need something more abrasive for the heavy scratches.
I would look into getting a Porter Cable 7424. Here's some things that you can do with it:

It's random orbital, not circular, so it's much safer to use than a circular polisher.
If you want to really RESTORE and MAINTAIN your car's paint, invest the $$$ and get it.
You can get a starter kit here:

As for which products to use, and detailing techniques, you can search the BMW Detailing Forum:
http://forums.roadfly.org/forums/detailing/
There's so much information in there, it'll make your head spin. Search for "remove swirls" or "3M SMR" or "3M PI-III" and you'll get a ton of hits.
I once read in there that, "Just looking at a black car will cause swirls to appear". As an owner of a black car, I swear it's true!

Rep Power: 0 If your choices are Meguiars and 3M I would chose 3M. I am not a fan of Meguiars at all. I have had good luck with 3M swirl remover for dark color cars and 3M body shop / clear coat safe compound. However, my choice would be to use Poorboy's Super Swirl Removers www.poorboysworld.com
