whirling freeway noise

I have a 2001 automatic coupe and 17" wheels and i know it's not the tires making the noise, i can hear that noise and it changes depending on what type of freeway material I'm driving on. I get this sort of loud whirling type noise above 60MPH and I tried applying the brakes while keeping speed above 60 and no change to the noise, so i know it's not the brakes...

Any ideas? It's driving me crazy!!!

It's probably the tires. A friend of mine bought some cheap *** 17s (40's) and his car makes a horrible noise. Look at the stats on the tires when you buy them, they actually show you how noisy the can get.

Civic_RedLine will become famous soon enough
I have low pro file yokohama tires. Ultra high perfomance. The high perfomance ones make more noise then regular all season tires. The noise does not bother me. But I do know what your talking about because I had factory all seasons then changed to high performance w-rated and I heard more road noise because of the tires. So its most likely the tire. You gotta remember though the freeway could cause the sound too. On my way to vegas on the freeway, I remember like an hour before you hit vegas theres a road that makes alot of noise. So it could be the road or the tires.

I know the road noise, i can hear it change depending on the type of freeway material, this noise I'm talking about never changes, it's always the same, it seems more speed dependant than surface dependant

My girlfriend's car is making the same fawking noise. She has the same model and 17's too. It's not the tires cuz she had stock tires and it made the same noise. So I put on 17s with paradas and the noise was the same. Then I put another set of Falken ST115 which are supposed to be hella quiet tires. Same damn noise.

is it that loud humming noise when the wind hits you just right, sounds like it comes from the drivers front wheel well? I had that problem when I first got my car, but it went away?

Its not the tires its the car. The Civic is a "economy car" not a quiet smooth riding Caddy. Have you had the inside panels off yet? the car has thin plastic heafty bags for insulation, my old el camino had paper before I put insulation in it. If you dont want noise try putting some matting in place of the Heafty Cinch Sacks that are in the door panels and wheel wells, Im sure that would be more affordable than buying another set of tires. Yoor car will stay warmer in the winter and cooler in the summer, plus you woman wont have to scream as much when she tell you to SLOW DOWN!!!!
