Steering creak mystery?

All, I’ve got a 2000 1.6SE Auto, c.80k miles. Had it about a year and it’s great overall - everything works, no rust, drives fine.

one problem is a horrendous creak from the steering, which seems to come and go. It’s like a plastic on plastic creak every time you move the wheel - like somethings dry. Sounds like from behind the dash, but difficult to tell.

One random thing I noticed is that in “Drive”, but stationary, with the foot brake on, rocking the wheel it creaks. In “Park” with handbrake on, it initially creaks but then stops.

Done some Google searches which seem to indicate it’s a reasonably common thing, but no definitive fix. I’ve taken it to the garage who can’t find any issues (although I’m not convinced they actually heard it).

Some suggestions include rack centre slider (apparently a big job to access), some kind of column bearing lube issue or coil over upper bearings.

Any ideas on how to eliminate this?

Thanks!

Apologies, it’s a 2001 car, so Mk.7

Moved to Mk.6 by mods due to my error.
