My new spindle nuts don't align with the notch

My service manual, an E-bay knock off if that matters, simply says to add some oil and torque the nut to 134 pound feet then stake the nut.

I did that and both sides are no where near having the staked portion of the nut meet up with the notch it should fall into. Did I miss something? Is it 134 lb-ft then forward to align the notch?

Do I need to disregard the staked area that was in the new nuts and just stake that collar into the notch wherever it lies?

Is my wife driving a death-mobile right now, endangering everyone's life on the road?

As Dr. Szell asked: Is it safe?

Disregard the previously staked area and make new ones. Are they the same axles and same axle nuts? I mean, theoretically should line up close-ish. In any case, I'd double check torque then say screw it and put new stake marks. Stake marks are just so the nut doesn't magically vibrate itself off, as long as the nut is torqued and staked, should be fine

Stake the nut after torquing, not before

Sounds like old nut unstaked and reused. Hence the "stake isn't aligning." My assumption, at least

It's the same axles, new nuts. I'll check torque and stake 'em where they need! Thank you!!

Re: My new spindle nuts don't align with the notch

I thought I responded to this, but I'm also having Windows updating like crazy right now, so maybe everything didn't submit as intended.

Left and right are both new nuts. The new nuts have a little area that is marked with paint as a notch that looks like it's been pinched with wire cutters. I had assumed that is where it's intended to meet up with the divot in the axle; it doesn't, in reality.

I have double checked (and will triple check) the torque. I've no problem staking the nut outside of the indicated pinched point, just trying to make sure that the mark on the nut not aligning with the notch in the axle isn't something that needs to be addressed more than ignoring it and making my own staked area.

I would ignore it considering they're not OEM nuts. If you're concerned you could always grab some OEM ones, they're not expensive
