Weird KYB piston nut - damaged?

Weird KYB piston nut - damaged?

I'm doing struts on my civic and the replacement nuts that came with the KYB struts seem damaged. Or is this some kind of locking mechanism that I've never seen?

Here's what the top threads look like:


Here's as far as I can get the nut on by hand due to the bent threads:


Should I just use the old one? seems in fine condition.

That's a lock nut. The top edges are crimped so it can't back off by itself after it's tightened.

Ya those are a bit$$!

When I did mine I held the chrome strut rod with pliers wrapped in a shop cloth.

Then used an impact gun.


You're probably supposed to use an Allan key and a wrench, so if you try the above technique, go slow and mak sure the pliers are well wrapped.
