RPMs going up but car isn't accelerating
RPMs going up but car isn't accelerating
Hi guys, new member here. I have been looking for threads similiar to what I'm experiencing but couldn't come across one. So I'm posting here. So maybe a week ago, my 2005 honda civic lx (almost 169,00 miles) did this sudden jump where i was going about 20 mph and my rpms jumped from like 2-4. Since then, the car has only been able to get up to like 25 mph-35 mph but the rpms will continue to rise. I have a video of the issue that I can send if needed. I just changed out my evap canister purge valve for a P0497 code that I got. Since then the check engine light has turned off, but in regards to what is going on, there isn't any check engine light on. Any help would be greatly appreciated . I can change out parts but I'm not really car savvy tbh.

Is this a manual trans? It almost sounds like your clutch is slipping. Same could apply to torque converter. May throw a code but I can't say for certain.
Re: RPMs going up but car isn't accelerating
It is an automatic, sorry for not stating in original post. And that is something someone else told me was the torque converter. I'm thinking of doing a transmission fluid flush and if that doesn't fix the issue, you think it's most likely the torque converter?
Re: RPMs going up but car isn't accelerating
Well it's my fiance's vehicle. So I know for at least the last 3 years nothing has been done as far as the transmission fluid. Should I just refill with more tran fluid or do a full fluid flush? I watched a video on YouTube and it seems like it's pretty simple to do. Thanks again for replying. The car is our only way to work and we got kids so I really gotta find a way to fix it so we can get to work.
Re: RPMs going up but car isn't accelerating
Sorry, what do you mean by drain it 3 times? Do you have like a video you could link me just so I can know what you mean? Like fill it with tran fluid, drive it for a bit, then drain, and repeat 2 more times?

Re: RPMs going up but car isn't accelerating
Use only OEM Honda DW-1 ATF for best results. These transmissions are cranky with other brands of ATF.
What you may be experiencing is flaring which can be as a result of clutch debris clogging the internal screens and filter and affecting the ATF flow to shift gears. Recommended maintenance is a drain and fill of ATF every 30K miles or for those that have experienced Honda transmission failures in the past, a drain and fill every 3rd oil change.
